It took a full week for Midnight to recover enough to walk on her own again, but the Team didn't see any of it. The second Midnight could be moved Batman took her to the Batcave he watched over her like a hawk, or bat. whenever he did come to the cave it was short lived he would be there for a few minutes and go beck to 'see how Midnight was doing.' At this point even the Justice League was concerned about him, Rodin and Batgirl were jealous and mad at him for forgetting them, the Team was loosing control. Without The Batman almost everyone seamed... lost. He had controlled almost everything they did, without him, who knows what happens.
Nightwing Zeta-ed to the Batcave, "Hey Bats are you in here?" He wouldn't say his name there were often other superheros down here at sometime or another. There was no answer. The car plane and boat were here so he was to, Dick being Dick knew he had nothing going on tonight, so after a search or the cave changed into 'city clothes' and went into the main mansion. He met Alfred on the way from the secret door in Bruce's study to the hallway.
Alfred, "Mr. Dick sir, what pray tell what are you doing here?" His tone implied he didn't want unexpected visitors and just the slightest hint of nervousness.
Dick replied in a friendly tone, "Al it's been a long time but I'm looking for Bruce, you know where he is?"
Alfred, "I am afraid he isn't here right now, maybe you could come back some time tomorrow he has less going on then." Bruce had taught Alfred to lie very well, one of the things you have to do if you know a secret identity and don't want others to know, Bruce also taught Dick that same skill, along with it came the ability to see when someone is lying. Alfred was lying.
Dick looked down for a moment then back at Alfred hating to call him out on something like this, "Alfred, I know he had nothing on any of his schedules tonight and he isn't out as The Bat either, all of the cars are here," his tone was knowing and sad at the same time, "Where is he?" he had stopped to let him answer but before that could happen to tacked onto the end, "I know he has some girl here too hurt pretty badly still, as far as I've understood."
Alfred gave a defeated sigh just before Dick smiled slightly, "Come on he brought her as far up as he could," He started walking to the kitchen, "I was going to get him some lunch." There was sorrow in his voice, "He won't admit it but it's not food or seclusion that he needs, what he needs is to get back to you, all of you and he won't do that with her here." It had gone to fear, and maybe a little bit of anger, towards Midnight maybe.
Dick, "What do you know about her, I understand that she is maybe his," even weeks later is was still hard to say, thought he told nobody, "his daughter. When she is with us she goes by the name Midnight, appropriate as she acts like a shadow says nothing and has done everything we've thrown at her, but that is the extent of my knowledge." He only let a tiny bit of sadness in his voice so it seamed like he cared for Midnight. He didn't.
Alfred had finished the sandwiches, "Up here, he won't leave her." He took the platter with food and two glasses of water up to the top floor, no one said a word, until they got there, "Master Bruce sir, you have a visitor," He was interrupted by the doorbell sounding thought the house, "Other than that one, I will be right back." He set the tray on the bedside table and left the room. Dick came in.
Bruce, "Didn't he tell you I didn't want anyone here?" His tone was not in the least bit pleasant. Bruce normally was pleasant, Batman wasn't.
Dick, "Yes he also told me you needed to get back to life. Life BEFORE she showed up." He nodded to Midnight who now as in a black t-shirt and a dark pair of jeans.
Bruce, "If you must know BEFORE she was here I was never the Batman, just a man."
Dick, "So she is your daughter, isn't she?" It was gentle not a question, more to confirm what he already knew. But didn't want to believe.
