Chris and PJ exchanged nervous glances with each other as Dan walked away from their table. "I don't understand why he looked so upset." Chris muttered, watching intently as Dan left the cafeteria.

"Yeah.. we didn't do anything! We just asked him something." PJ responded, turning to make eye-contact with Chris.

"Should we go after him?"

"He's probably gone to speak to Phil. They are definitely together but why hasn't Dan told us yet?"

"I have no idea." Chris sighed, looking down at the table and folding his arms.

-

The bell rang but Dan didn't really feel like going to class where he would have to sit next to Chris and PJ. He much rather to stay in the toilets, isolated from other people. Dan just wanted to be alone. He could feel his phone vibrating in his pocket but he just ignored it, not wanting to talk to anyone. Dan assumed it was Phil but he still couldn't bring himself to answer.

He just allowed himself to sit against one of the toilet doors, hugging his knees. He just wanted to think about everything which had happened throughout the last few weeks.

Before Phil, he was happy but as soon as Phil entered his life, he became ecstatic. But.. He wasn't feeling very ecstatic at that moment.

-

Chris and PJ were sat in English, their reading books open in front of them. They weren't really paying much attention  because both of their minds were on Dan because he wasn't in his usual seat beside them. And surprise, surprise, Phil wasn't in class either. They assumed that they were together, bunking or whatever but, little did they know, Dan was just a hall or so away, crying his heart out.

-

"Phil, are you even listening?" Phil's mum yelled, glaring at her son as if he had just committed the worst crime... which he hadn't, unless ignoring your mum had become a crime in the last ten minutes.

"No, mum. I'm not. Why should I?" Phil grumbled, slipping his phone out of his pocket to check if Dan had texted him yet.. he hadn't.

"Because this is serious. You are on the verge of getting excluded from your third school all because you decide to 'not show up' for the majority of the lessons!" Phil just shrugged, folding his arms for a moment before his phone alerted him that he had a text message. It was from Dan.

Phil? Are you busy? Can you come get me?

Just as Phil was about to type out a response saying yeah, definitely, thanks for giving me an excuse to get out of my house and my mum's wraths but his mum spoke up before he could.

"Give me that phone. This is ridiculous. I shouldn't be having this conversation with you for the thousandth time. I wish you were more like Martyn, well behaved, smart but no, you're you. You have to be a rebel, don't you? You make my life so much harder, you know? Just act your age for a moment." Phil's mouth dropped as he shook his head, furrowing his eyebrows.

"I'm not Martyn though, am I? I'm sorry I'm not perfect, I'm sorry that I'm a pathetic excuse for a son but that's who I am. I like being me." Phil practically growled, his left fist clenching into a fist. His other hand was clutching onto his phone for dear life, never wanting to hand it over. "You might not like it, but I do. I am who I am and if you don't accept that then.. then.. why do you bother with me?"

"I bother with you because you're my son and I have to."

"Are you saying that you wouldn't care about me if you didn't have to?"

"That's not what I meant-" His mum tried to reason but Phil was already out of the door.
