Unknown Friend
Chapter 2
I don't even dare to look back. I know I'm screaming but no words can be heard. I wonder how I managed to reach the second floor. I ran as fast as I could without opening my eyes.
Gasping, I rested my back on the wall. "God, I'm really shaking." I whispered.
"Hey Ms Harlem. What are you---"
"I am going to die!" I screamed at the tough of my lungs. I dropped my bag on the floor and covered my face with my cold hands. The man will going to kill me. I won't be able to go home anymore.
"Hey, Ms Harlem! I didn't do anything. Don't scream!"
"Aaaaaaaaah! Please, don't kill me!" I begged.
"Ms. Harlem!" he repeated. "What are you saying?" I heard the voice of Mr. Rodney, our library janitor. His voice is different from that voice at the 3rd floor.
I stopped screaming and slowly uncovered my face. I know I look pale. I'm just hoping that I won't faint right now because Mr. Rodney cannot carry me out of this place with his thin built. And surely, the man I'm running from will catch us both if that happens.
"Earth to Ms. Harlem! Are you alright?"
I didn't answer.
"Ms. Harlem!" he shouted.
"Yeah, I'm fine! " I came out in a harsh tone.
Silence.
"I'm sorry Mr. Rodney. I'm just..." I don't know what to say.
"What happened? ", he interrupted.
"N-nothing... It's just...Oh don't mind me. Mr. Rodney. I'm fine. I've got to go." I gave him a faint smile. "Uhm...Mr. Rodney, I--I think someone's still there", I pointed the closed glass door. "I ---I failed to close the window, w--would you mind doing it for me?" I asked in my shaky voice without looking back.
I waited for his response.
Silence.
I heard him saying something "Looks like you've met my friend up there". I lifted my head and found no one. Where's Mr. Rodney? I asked myself.
"Oh my!"I screamed hysterically. I closed my eyes and ran again. I can't breathe but I have to run. I was about to reach the first floor when I bumped to Mr. Rodney.
"What the --?" I was panting. "I left you at the 2nd floor, how come ---you're here?" I asked accusingly. I'm crazy!
"What are you talking about Ms. Harlem? I just came here. I'm with Mr. Guillard all this time." He said with confusion on his face. I looked at Mr. Guillard, who is standing behind Mr. Rodney. He gave me a nod.
"Are you taking drugs?" Mr. Rodney blurted.
"No! Of course not. I'm pretty sure that I've seen you there! I - I don't know how you did that. But---I". I looked at them confused. " I - I think I'm just-- tired." I sighed. I'm going nuts.
"Yeah, Ms Harlem. I think you have to go. It's already 6:30 pm. May I remind you that students are only allowed to use the library until 6pm.", Mr. Rodney said in a worried tone.
"If Mrs. Loreanie will find this out, I'm sure you'll get a detention. But don't worry, I won't tell her. ", he continued. Mrs Loreanie is our strict old maid university librarian. Never in my college life will I wish to have a detention with her.
"Thank you, Mr. Rodney. I'll better get going." They both gave me a nod and I continued walking towards the exit. "HELL, YEAH! I'M CRAZY!"
