Book of the Dead
I looked at Atlas intently as if trying to decipher what exactly he wanted to talk about the “human” he was referring to. He was looking at me with a serious expression on his face without batting his eyelashes.
“Who’s human?” I asked finally breaking the silence. I got off of my bed and walked towards the open window. I suppressed a sigh as I tried to imagine the land during daylight.
Imagine…That’s all I could do. If only we weren’t cursed to stay in the darkness, we could marvel the place like mortals could. A normal phenomenon of day and night…But it couldn’t be…Darkness is the only identity known for this place and I was used to it not until I met her.
“You know who she is!” said Atlas, raising his voice on his sternly brotherly manner. “Don’t play dumb, Vladimir. You know you can’t fall for her. It will do no good.”
“Do no good?”I repeated with hatred evident in every word I said as I turned around and faced him.
“What good do we have in here? There’s none, Atlas. None. Ever since we’re brought in this place, we are deprived of what good we should have. If they didn’t make us like this, I and even you too could have the liberty to decide for ourselves.”
I saw him stunned with the words he heard from me. I knew some part of him see things the way I envisioned it but it just hard for him to accept. He was suppressing the part of insurrection making me think the he had surrendered his normal life long time ago. After all, he has always been a good follower of Dark Council. But there’s a part of me, hoping that he didn’t fully give up at all.
I looked at him straightly to the eyes but he looked away. “Atlas, I know you understand what I’m trying to point out. Let’s--.”
“Vlad.” He immediately interrupted as he tried to control his emotions by curling his fist into a ball tightly, whitening his knuckles. “You just have to stop. Just accept that this is what we are now. Don’t be difficult.”
“Difficult?” I shouted and rushed towards him. I held his collar tightly wishing I could beat the hell out of him and make him comprehend the meaning of his words. I was angered by the fact that he can’t even stand for himself…that he already surrendered. “I’m not the one being difficult here! It’s you and your damn law!”
He held my collar with equal intensity and answered sarcastically. “Don’t forget that it’s your law too! You’re living with it for the past thirteen years of your life and--”
“And have no intention of honoring it anymore.” I supplied.
He looked at me in horror. “What did you say?”
“You heard me right, Atlas.” I said matter-of-factly. “I’ll break the law if it means that I can be with her.” I continued with determination.
In one swift move, he fist landed on my jaw. It was unexpected. We had petty quarrels from the past but never had he laid his fist on me. He always guides his temper but I guess I have pushed him to his limit. With the sudden impact, I lost my balance and fell on the floor. He dashed again and made another blow. He did hit me twice and I knew that he’s challenging me to fight back. Willing to give him what he asked for, I hit him hard on his face. I pushed him forcefully so he would lay flat on the floor. “I mean it, Atlas.” I said.
