Scripture text: Philippians 2:13 "for it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure."
I do not try to swim a swim meet I train to swim it. In the spiritual sense we do not try to be more sensitive to God we train to be more sensitive to God. We do not try to overcome our past we train to overcome it.
What does training mean to you? What is the difference between training and trying?
To some, it may mean to practice the day before the event and that is training but; literally, training really means practicing repeatedly until you become an expert at it. To keep sucking at it until we are flawless at it. It is said that anything worth doing is worth doing badly first until it is done with ease and perfection.
We can't try to do it, we train to do it! Babies are prime examples in that. For example, a baby does not try to walk he or she trains until he or she is a walker. Also, they do not try to speak they listen and train until they become a speaker.
Based on the examples given how can we train to be more sensitive to God? Can we do it alone? Hmmm. I don't think so not without God's help. Then it would be impossible. Look at Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me"
So in all things, it is Christ who gives us the strength we need. When we pray and tell God our weaknesses, we may not realize it, but we are recognizing that we need God's help and also telling him that we are willing to train. That is a big step! If we really are willing to ask for and accept his help then he will help us. We must have faith that he is helping and we are not doing it alone.
Did you know that God was helping us from before we even asked him too? Isn't God a good God?
Take a look back at your life how it was operating the few times you may have excluded God, and ask yourself; what could I have done to change that? That change can only take place in the future and if we don't accept the past and move forward we won't have time to make a difference since all our time would be centered on our past rather than the present (the big picture). Train to make that change. Training is a continuous set of repeated actions done for a course or event. What if one is no good at swimming should he or she train to swim a swim meet? No instead train to do what he or she is good at and work on what they are not good at until it becomes a strength and then train it. If we train our weaknesses and not train our strengths, our strengths will eventually become weaknesses. It would take a long time to train our weaknesses back to strengths. With so many weaknesses and hardly any strengths, this will cause doubt in oneself and may even lead to depression, anxiety or low self-esteem among others. That is why it is important to trust God, train our strengths and work on our weaknesses. The most important rule is; one step at a time.
When we are lazy, we try to use as an excuse for not wanting to make the effort. God is not lazy and if we truly want to be like him each and every day, we will have to drop our lazy attitude and get to work. Against all odds, all distractions we allow God to pick us up and pour out his strength over us that we may press to the higher mark of the upward calling of God.
What will you do try or train?
