Here is chapter 4! I felt like updating early. If every day isn't fast enough for you :)
********
The week zipped by in an instant, and before I know it, it's the day before my dreaded departure. And here I am, laying on my bedroom carpet in my pajamas with empty suitcases surrounding me in all directions. Who Can It Be Now by Men At Work is blasting through my surround sound speakers.
I hear someone knocking on my door. Speak of the devil, I think to myself.
Without giving me a chance to reply, Kai pops his head in my room. I turn off the music with a nearby remote without shifting my position on the floor.
"Hey sis, you know you only got 10 hours till your flight, right?" he says with a concerned expression on his face.
I groan. "Ugh, don't remind me."
"Well I did you a favor and called Chloe for help with this emergency situation," he says, nodding at the empty suitcases.
"This is not.... oh," I realize as I look around me. This certainly was an emergency. Why is Kai always right?
"I'm always right," Kai smirks, reading my mind.
I make shooing motions with my hands. "Yeah, yeah, just go away."
"Love you, too!" Kai rolls his eyes before shutting the door behind him, leaving me on the floor in utter and complete silence. Time to relax...
Minutes later, I hear a weird scratching sound at my window. I get up and walk over to my window to open it. Sure enough, Chloe is dangling by her fingertips from my second story window.
"Help, help, help!" she cries.
"Chloe, are you crazy!!?" I shout to her as I struggle to pull her up into my room. This is one of those moments in life where I wish I were a bodybuilder.
Luckily, Kai comes bursting through my door after hearing all the commotion. He pushes me aside and pulls Chloe up by the hands with ease.
Chloe gasps for air while getting up from the floor. "Well that's something I'm never doing again," she confirms after catching her breath.
I frown. "And why were you doing it in the first place? Do you have a death wish?!"
She puts her hands on her hips. "Well I heard about am emergency, so I wanted to dramatically enter the crime scene like a superhero," she explained.
"Yeah, well you know what they say... set the standards high, right?" Kai chuckles as he leaves the room.
Chloe turns bright red. "Your hunk of a brother just talked to me!" She squeals after he leaves. "And he saved my life, too!" She places her hand over her heart looking starry eyed.
"As soon as you stop drooling, let's start discussing the real reason why you're here."
Chloe slaps her forehead. "Oh yeah, the emergency thing!" She scans my room. "Wow, this really is an emergency. Okay, let's get to work! You start packing jeans and leggings, I'll pack shirts." She claps her hands together in excitement. "We'll have you packed in no time!"
**********
Four sodas, two bags of chips, a package of Oreos, and two iPods of music later, we are done.
"Hey, do you want to sleep over tonight?" I ask Chloe from the couch.
"You bet I do! Then I can see you off at the airport tomorrow!" She says from the kitchen while making popcorn for the movie.
She joins me at the couch and yawns. We are both very tired from all the packing. After staying awake for half the movie, we eventually drift off to sleep on the couch piled on top of each other.
*********
Plunk.
Plunk.
Plunk.
I half-open one eye to see who is attacking me with... popcorn? I rub both eyes and reluctantly open them. I find myself staring at the ceiling from being sprawled halfway on the couch, with my head and arms on the floor. Suddenly Chloe's face appears in front of my own.
"Wake up, sleepyhead," she shouts in my ear. I jump, causing the bottom half of my body land on my top half, doing an intricate yoga pose. Good thing I'm flexible, I think to myself.
"What did you do that for?!" I mumble, getting up from the living room floor.
"Today's the last day I am going to see you for a whole year, silly, so don't get on my bad side," she jokes while pulling me in the direction of the bathroom after shoving clothes in my arms. I though she was upset I was leaving, but I guess not anymore.
After an hour of getting ready for the trip, Chloe, Kai, my mother, and I squeeze into my mother's BMW. My luggages are in the trunk and I have my passport and plane itinerary, so I'm ready to go. As we pull out of the driveway, I turn my head back to take one last glimpse of my home. I can feel tears pooling in my eyes, but I ignore them. It's only for a year, I tell myself.
Ready or not, Washington here I come!
