aspyn woke up surprisingly early the next day not from the unnecessary loudness coming from upstairs, but from the feeling of needing a wee. she ran as fast as she could from her comfy mattress to her own bathroom, shutting the door closed behind her as she did her business.
while she was sat down, she glanced at her left wrist and saw her digits go up. she felt relieved for knowing she's not going to die anytime soon, but she wasn't exactly feeling happy. she couldn't be the only one to have those times when you don't understand what you're feeling, could she?
thinking her feelings weren't much of a big deal, she let the thought of it slip away and carried on with her day which she didn't have plans for. she had a bank account with enough money to sustain her for awhile, but she had a gut feeling that her stepfather would freeze her bank account to force her to come back home to his big hell of a mansion and stop rebelling against him. this thought was the root to her new thought of getting a new job, something that pays well but doesn't need that much effort. she wasn't the kind to work her ass off and get little in return; she believed that what good doing of hers will sprout into a good living.
after taking a shower and slipping into her over-sized tee shirt and a pair of shorts, she stomped towards the kitchen, smelling something delicious. "what is that?"
"good morning to you, too," jian said, flipping over some pancakes on the stove. "i made coffee for you. you'll find it by the counter."
"thanks," aspyn muttered to her best friend, who was now serving the pancakes on the kitchen island. she took a seat next to aspyn and noticed something different about her. "why are you looking at me like that?"
"there's something different about you today," jian pointed out as aspyn ate a portion of her pancake. "you look a lot better for a girl who just broke up with her boyfriend."
"hey, are there any coffee shops around here? i mean, who am i kidding? of course there are!" aspyn stood up from her stool, taking small sips from her hot coffee. "but, i was just kind of wondering ... "
"you don't like my coffee?" jian pouted, which she responded with, "no, i love it! i was just wondering maybe i should get a new job."
aspyn was studying law at a prestigious university back in sydney before, much thanks to her stepfather being close friends with the owner of the university. she didn't like it there; everyone was serious, too serious. she even thought the amount of stress she was getting from there would be the cause of her death, but luckily she flew here and wouldn't have to deal with professors and classes and a whole ton of paperwork anymore. she had never worked before, not feeling the need to, but now she wanted to, not only for the money but also for the experience. that was what she was here for, right? to explore the city, to try new things, to remember what it felt like to live in world worthy of living in ... love was out of the picture.
you see, aspyn had a fair share of boyfriends before. her first one was when she was eleven (olivia and louis had no clue.) they broke up because apparently while they were in a relationship, the boy was seeing someone else. the next one was when she was fourteen, and they broke up because the boy didn't say the magical three words back. and the third, was clifford. ya'll know why they broke up. and with the outcomes of her past relationships, she was almost convinced that love wasn't for her; that maybe, just maybe, there wasn't anyone out there for her. maybe this was her fate.
"you've got to be kidding me," jian said with her mouth full. "aspyn sienna evans, wanting to find a new job?"
"oh, come on, i can't be that lazy."
"says the girl who spends most of her days locked inside her room doing nothing but surfing the internet for funny videos and listening to her classical taste of music and eating all day. i'm surprised you're not fat yet."
"me too."

that afternoon of the same day, aspyn went to a coffee shop located five blocks away from her apartment building. she figured that she might as well work in a place where she loved to stay to lessen the stress level. upon entering, she looked around the place and observed how the shop had a modern taste to it - white square tables with matching white chairs, catchy slogans painted on the white walls, some pictures frames with images of different kinds of latte art, and some houseplants on the side. it was not anything special to most people, but to aspyn? oh, every single coffee shop was like a newborn baby to her.
she walked to the counter to ask the barista currently working on the counter if their manager was their so she could speak to them to apply for an available job at the place. but as soon as she saw the barista look up from getting some cups down the counter, she felt her heart beating fast inside her chest.
"hi, welcome to coffeeworks! what can i get for - oh shit."
