it was a rainy morning, and it made aspyn feel the best that she was. well, almost. you see, unlike many people, she loved the rain and how it would seem to wash away all of her worries. it was like every single droplet contained a ball of happiness or whatever that would dissolve in the air and the people surrounding the air feel better, and safer.
but she couldn't disagree to the fact that it wasn't the safest she had felt. no, the safest she had felt was in the arms of a person, holding her so tight that she felt the tiny pieces of her slowly build up inside. it was like she was being remade into a better version of herself; a happier one.
aspyn smiled as she walked out of her apartment door, not having to say goodbye to her housemate as jian was pretty much out and about before she opened her eyes, busy with her university stuff. sometimes aspyn would wonder what could have been the outcome if she continued going to uni; would she succeed? no, scratch that. the real question was, would she be happy?
she closed her eyes and shook her head, mentally telling herself to just push the thought aside and carry on with the life she had now; the simpler life. she walked down the street going to the coffee shop and got there in no time, smiling and waving to the customers she passed by. some of them returned the favor, some did not.
"morning, luke!" she greeted the boy behind the counter, who waved at her in response. aspyn was feeling a little bit happier than she'd ever been this past few days that it scared her that there might be something bad coming her way. her hours? oh, that has not been her problem for awhile now.
ever since she met luke, her hours have been stable and were never down like it was before. she thought it was god's way of telling her that being with him was not a bad idea, and that made her feel contented. it was all she needed. (or was it he?)
she was just spraying some cleansing liquid (or whatever the hell it was called) on the glass window when she heard a loud thud coming from behind her. she turned around to see luke standing in front of a cardboard box that was on the floor, with all of its contents scattered around everywhere. she instinctively ran to him, helping the poor boy pick up all of the sugar patches from the floor before josie would come out of her office and lecture him about being careful; it was not like she would do that to luke, anyway.
"uh, thanks," luke mumbled, holding up the box to her to put the last bit of the patches in. "i was just holding it and then it slipped my hand and i didn't know why."
"that's okay," aspyn said, patting his shoulder for reassurance. "but, are you okay, though? you seem kind of pale today."
it was true. he seemed kind of pale that day; of course he was pale before but this time he was just ... paler. and that made her feel kind of alarmed that maybe, just maybe, something bad was about to happen. she hated herself for thinking that, but she just couldn't help it.
"i - i'm okay, aspyn," said luke. "don't worry, everything's okay. that's what you told me the other day, remember?"
of course she remembered, how couldn't she? she would never forget when she woke up to his silent cries and whimpers; it hurt seeing him hurt. she shook the hell out of him to wake him up and wiped his tears away and told him that was everything was going to be okay. why wouldn't it be, right?
"yeah," she smiled. "everything's gonna be okay."
as soon as aspyn finished her sentence, she heard the double doors open and saw two broad-shouldered men come in, both of them wearing caps. they went straight for the counter and started to turn their heads to different directions, looking for wherever the hell the barista was.
"you should go back there now," aspyn nudged him in the side playfully. "bye, luke."
"no," he deadpanned. "no?" she lowered her voice.
"don't say bye or goodbye to me, aspyn," he said seriously, putting the box he was carrying down the floor and looked back up at her. "because goodbye means you're just leaving me and never going to come back to me again and i don't want that to happen. i want you to stay."
well, that left her stunned, not expecting those words to tumble out of his mouth. she thought it was sweet, anyway.
"just," he continued when she didn't say anything, using hand gestures now. "just don't say that word, okay? just say see you later or, uh, something."
"something," aspyn said, laughing at her own joke when luke didn't. "okay, okay! see you later, luke."
"alright, see you."
she came back to the window, spraying on it again and trying her best to make it look as neat as it could ever be. it hasn't been two minutes before luke tapped her shoulder and spun her around to face him, pressing his forehead against hers so she couldn't do anything else but look into his eyes.
"you have to go now," he whispered. "you have to go."
"but i just got here!" aspyn pouted, her voice louder than his. "why would you want me to go when i thought you wanted me to stay?"
"because - "
"hey luke! come back here!" a voice called out for him, making both of them look at the tall, broad man with a cap on who was coming towards their way. "who the fuck are you talking to?"
as the man was getting closer and closer, aspyn could see that he had the same eye color as luke, like the ocean. he also had the same nose, and his hair was also blonde-ish. he was looking at her, his eyes squinting to take a clearer look at her face.
"sienna?"
"who are you?"
