the sound of birds chirping by the window woke aspyn up, her eyes momentarily blinded by the rays of the sun peeking from another window with the curtains half-closed. she sat down at the edge of of her bed, contemplating how she was feeling that day - fine. not good, not bad, just fine. she sighed, standing up on the carpet floor and walking towards her end table to open one of its drawers and took one hair tie to fix the one-hell-of-a-mess bird's nest lying on top of her head. as she did so, she thought of how unrealistic most of the movies around this time, with the main character waking up with perfectly brushed hair like they just stay in one position when they're sleeping.
after washing her face and brushing her teeth, she walked out of her little room and let her little feet take her to where she needed to be at the moment. she breathed in the familiar smell of coffee in the morning and, as she guessed, waffles.
"good morning!" aspyn greeted jian, giving her a bear hug before plopping down on the stool by the kitchen island beside her. "oh, how i love to wake up to the smell of precious coffee in early morning."
"oh my god, you just woke up?" the small knife on jian's hand left her grasp as soon as she saw her best friend walking up to her, her eyes getting ten times wider. "now?"
"i know, right?" she sassed, letting go of her ponytail to reveal the makeshift bird's nest she was sporting today. "i woke up like this."
"uh, that's not what i meant," said jian.
"what do you mean?" aspyn said, then sang the chorus of justin bieber's new song the next second, taking the chance she had for a pun. "oooOOOooh, when you nod your head yes but you wanna say no, what do you mean?"
"really?"
"what?"
"look at the clock." and so she did, seeing that it was nine forty-five in the morning. "and?"
"check the date." and so she did, fishing her phone from the pocket of her sweatpants, opening the app. and then it hit her.
"fuck," she said, then repeated it for about five minutes straight as she ran as fast as she could back to her room and changed her clothes, sprayed cologne all over her body, and put on a pair of shoes with different colors of socks underneath.
ain't nobody got time for matching socks, especially her, for she was an hour and forty-five minutes late to her first day at work. of course she set an alarm an hour and forty-five minutes ago, but she figured that she must have snoozed it and fell back to sleep. of course she did. she didn't have time to put on make up or anything else that would make her look more human than a dying seal, but given the time, she took off running with her little legs towards the coffee shop, stopping every now and then to grasp at a post and catch her breath. this was the reason she hated track and field, or any kind of sport that involved running, actually.
about five minutes later, with two consisting of running and three consisting of catching her breath, aspyn finally reached the coffee shop, bracing herself for josie's bickering and possibly firing her as she took a deep breath before opening the double doors and entering the place.
"you're late!" josie stood in front of her, her arms on both sides of her hips. "is this how you want to make a good impression on me? well, in that case, you're - "
"gonna start working," a deep voice with a not-so-thick australian accent interjected, as she felt a hand on her shoulder. "she's gonna start moping the floor now, auntie."
"lukey!" josie's endeavor changed as soon as luke came to the picture, making aspyn snort and covering it up with a cough as she was shooting daggers at her. "how nice of you to bring our new janitor her mop and a bucket of water!"
"it's always my pleasure to help her," the gorgeous boy said as his gaze fell on aspyn, smiling at her softly then turning back to his aunt afterwards. "i mean, uh, it's always my pleasure to help around the place, since this has been, you know ... i'm gonna go back to work now."
"you might as well do," josie folded her arms against her chest, her chin going higher as she looked up to aspyn (she was really short). "that goes for you too, young lady."
she spun her heel and walked away from them to go and chat with some fancy-looking customers seated at a distance, leaving aspyn standing with the mop on her hand and the pail of water on the other. the brunette sighed, walking off to somewhere before she heard luke call his name, and she turned around to face him.
"never mind," he mumbled, going to another direction. but aspyn was curious, and she was determined to find out what she wanted to find out, so she called his name and made him turn around to face her this time. "w - what?"
"just tell me."
"o - okay. uh, do you like harry potter because you can slytherin my bed." the blonde boy said as fast as he could, but she still heard every single word he said clearly. "no, uh, did i say slytherin my bed? i meant because i adumbledore you."
aspyn was stunned, her eyes big in terror and her mouth agape. there was an eerie silence between them before a customer whined loudly about not having a barista behind the counter.
"shit, uh, forget about everything i said and just go to work, okay? uh, what the fuck do i say? i'll see you around."
"see you, luke." she retorted as she went to start working her ass off for the day whilst silently laughing to herself as she replayed luke's pick up lines again and again on her mind, thinking about whether he thought of them by his own or stole them from the internet.
either way, she found it ad(umbledore)orable.
