"that's it, we're out of here," luke snapped, interlacing aspyn's hand with his as he dragged both of them out of the coffee shop, running as fast as he could. aspyn's mind was rising with question after question; she could not comprehend what the hell just happened back there.
"luke, wait!" she shouted, making luke stop running and look back at her. "aren't you at least going to tell me what the fuck are we running from?"
"look," he cupped her face with his hands, looking straight into her brown eyes. "you may not understand what's going on right now but trust me, aspyn, i'm doing you a favor - "
"and what favor is that, luke?" she snapped at him, pushing his hands away from her face. "burning my lungs from running away from what? some guy that just called me by my fucking middle name? what?"
she saw him look ahead of her, and he never look more alarmed. he took hold of her wrist and started running again; she had no choice but to just run with her, not wanting to go back to the coffee shop now as he had made it sound like the most dangerous place on earth. they ran and ran until luke found an empty alley around the corner, turning there to stop and catch their breaths.
"they won't find us here," said luke, wiping a line of sweat forming on his forehead with the sleeve of his shirt. aspyn just stood there, looking at him, waiting for him to tell him something, anything.
"what?"
"what do you mean, what?" she said angrily, stepping closer to him as their faces were inches away from touching. "who was that guy back there? did you know him? and how did he even know my middle name, for god's sake?"
"i don't know," he mumbled, not meeting her gaze.
"i don't know - are you fucking serious right now, luke?"
"i don't know, aspyn!" he yelled, his hands on the temples of his head as he sunk down to his knees. "i don't know what to say to you! i don't understand this!"
"well, news flash, blonde boy: neither do i!"
they both stayed silent for a moment, with luke still down on his knees and his hands now covering his face for her to see while she leaned her body on the wall filled with graffiti and other advertisement posters and shit, closing her eyes to calm herself down. she had a lot of questions going on inside her little mind, and she was pretty sure not a single one of them would be answered if she didn't speak up now. so she did.
"hey, talk to me. please?"
no response. he didn't move an inch, the only movement she could see from him was his chest heaving up and down as he breathed in and out the unseen chemicals in the air.
"luke, we can't just stay like this forever."
"because there isn't such a thing!" he stood up, coming closer to her and pinning both of her hands on the wall. "forever is a long fucking time and we wouldn't be able to last that long because we're all just going to die! don't act like your hours are gonna be stable forever, aspyn, because they're not! there's one day i'm going to fucking die and you too! stop acting like it won't happen, okay?"
aspyn never liked crying in front of people, she never liked crying at all. but there was just so much that happened that day and she'd had enough of all of his bullshit that she exploded, her tears falling rapidly down her cheeks to her neck and chest. her eyes were closed when luke muttered those words as she didn't know if she could handle seeing him like that; she thought he was building her up to be stronger, but now he broke all of her walls and she became fragile again.
"i'm sorry."
"go away."
"oh my god, what have i done? i'm sorry. i'm - "
"go fucking away from me, luke, or else i might do or say things i never want to say to you! just go!"
aspyn didn't move, waiting for him to move away from her and just leave. he used to do whatever she said, whether it was she wanted him to tell her another lame high school joke or give her a bear hug - he would do anything for her, but not that time. no, he just stood there, inches away from colliding their lips for the first time, but that was not what she needed him to do. at least not at the time.
"but i don't want to leave you, remember?"
"enough of that stupid cliche romantic lines from stupid cliche romantic movies, luke!" she smacked his chest, making him move away from her. "actually, you know what? if you don't want to go away from me, that's fine!"
"really?" luke's eyes lit up at her words, and she couldn't help but feel sorry for the next thing she said to the poor boy.
"yes, really! because i am gonna go away from you!"
she started walking away, heading back for her apartment, but she still heard his footsteps following her. "you can't get away from me, aspyn!"
"why does everyone keep saying that?" first, her stepfather. next, michael. and now, luke? oh, she'd had enough of people telling her what she could and could not do. she honestly didn't care about anything anymore.
"because you know you can't," luke answered, and she froze. "you can't go away from me because you know you're starting to have feelings for me and don't you dare tell me i'm talking nonsense here because you know it all makes sense. the way you look at me? oh, and you even let me take you somewhere you didn't know when it was two in the morning. now tell me you don't feel anything for me, aspyn. tell me."
"fuck you."
