"luke?" aspyn stuttered; she was not expecting to see him here at all. "you work here?"
"uh, yeah, my aunt owns this shop so i kind of, uh, help her out, i guess?" the blonde boy spoke, rubbing the back of his neck occasionally. "so, uh, you here to get some coffee?"
"no," she replied way too soon, making luke's face scrunch up in confusion. "i'm here to apply for a job, if there's any available, that is."
"oh." luke said, nodding his head mindlessly, but then after a second she noticed his eyes widen. "oh. i'll go get josie for you. she's in charge of the applicants."
aspyn muttered a little 'thank you' as luke waved at her before disappearing into a door with a sign labeled 'for personnel only.' not long, then, he came out with a short, ginger woman following his tracks; he introduced her to this woman, josie, and continued working at the counter afterwards, leaving aspyn alone with josie.
the australian girl followed josie inside the 'for personnel only' door and took a seat in front of her desk. "what's your name, age and why are you here?"
"i'm aspyn evans, eighteen, and i'm here because i want to work in this beautiful coffee shop, i guess?" she mumbled, half-smiling at the woman in front of her.
"you guess?" she stood up from her seat, looking down at aspyn like she was some sort of serial killer. "well, you should be sure of it! i don't want any applicants that would apply this day then leave the next! waste of time!"
aspyn's jaw fell to the floor as she did not expect this woman as how she represented herself; she thought she was sweet like how she sounded when she was talking with luke about how "she'd take care of things from here." her brain wasn't functioning clearly on that moment, and all she could think about was contemplate whether or not if the angry woman shooting daggers at her was on her period or, maybe, has an infant child inside her uterus (her figure was pretty big, least to say.)
while she was in the middle of her contemplating, luke must have heard the loud noise coming from the room as he expertly unlocked the door to where she and josie was and came running towards her, holding her by her shoulders and making her stand up next to him.
"are you okay?" he looked down at her, their height difference pretty showing, and whispered lowly. "did she hurt you?"
she shook her head no, trying her best to flash him the most amazing smile she could ever flash, but it didn't seem to click as luke sighed and moved his gaze to his aunt. "aunt josie, were you shouting at her?"
"no, lukey baby, no!" she rushed to him and cupped his worried face with her chubby hands. "i was just doing some mouth exercises! in fact, she's hired!"
"she is?" "i am?" the younger ones exclaimed, looking from each other momentarily to josie; the same level of excitement was painted on their faces.
"yes!"
"oh my god!" they said in unison, and as if in a cliche romantic movie, pulled to each other's arms, holding one another with their eyes closed. they stayed like that for a moment - aspyn's head resting on the crook of luke's neck as luke's chin brushed over the top of her head - when josie, of course, had to cough loudly to make them pull apart. the lovebirds muttered their apologies to her before she continue to spoke, in her angry facade.
"you are hired as the janitor of this beautiful coffee place, as you called it."
"i actually said shop instead of place, ma'am," aspyn corrected her politely before her eyes widened at the realization that she was going to be a freaking janitor. "wait - what?"
"take it or leave it," josie deadpanned, lowering her glasses a little bit to glare at her face once again. "you have one chance - "
"she'll take it!" luke beamed, suddenly sliding an arm on her shoulder, tilting his head lightly on the side of her face. "thank you very much, auntie."
with that, luke took aspyn's hand in hers, lacing their fingers together as he made his way out of the 'for personnel only' door, dragging her with him. he walked her through another door leading a dark path, and closed it behind him as he covered his lips with his hand in an attempt to not let a single noise be heard from the girl standing way too close to her.
"hey, hey," luke whispered, looking into her eyes. "calm down, i'm not going to hurt you. just don't shout, please?" she nodded at his request, but as soon as his incredibly huge hand flew away from her face to god knows where, she let out a scream.
"help m - " was all she managed to say before luke's hand flew back to her face again, shutting her up. she could feel his forehead on hers, resting there for a moment, and his whispers sent shivers down her spine. "hey, please. just - just here me out okay? i don't want to freak you out but i need you to take the job, please."
he didn't even ask why, but she didn't feel the need to ask him anyway. there was no trace of him in her eyes, but she felt his hands roam around her face, and that was enough to calm her down and let her know that she was safe, anyway. she didn't see how his eyes looked when he spoke those words, but the tone of his voice was enough to convince her that he wanted her to stay, anyway. hell, she didn't even know where he was dragging her into in the first place, but she let him do it anyway.
so she said yes, not only because she didn't mind cleaning the comfort rooms just to see him every day, but also because somewhere, something inside of him made her feel like she was safe; okay; loved. there was something about that sudden hug that made her feel like home in his arms. there was something about him that made her feel like she'd known him for years, when she'd only seen him not even a week ago.
