Clary's POV

I landed wobbly on the concrete streets of the outside of Idris' grandest building. Best female shadow hunter and I still can't portal without being a little dizzy. Hey everyone has a weakness. After getting my balance I looked up.

Ah, Town square. After the war with Sebastian Idris was remodeled and town square was built. I looked around at the small shops and the families shopping and enjoying themselves.

I was a bit sad. After I left New York, I missed them terribly. I sent letters from different addresses to let them know I was okay but so they couldn't track me.

Walking through town square with Hunter's hand wrapped around mine, everything was perfect.

Until I heard the scream.

Suddenly there was a demon attacking me.

I kicked away from it as Hunter went after it with a seraph blade. The demon was one of the ugliest I'd ever seen! It was wrinkly, with flesh so thin you could seen the pale purple veins underneath.

Hunter stabbed and jabbed at the demon, landing a few good hits, but the demon only looked annoyed. Suddenly, as though being controlled, Hunter stopped.

"Your fear is bright young shadowhunter." The demon said, licking its dry parched lips.

"Hunter?" I asked.

He winced like he was in pain. Tears flowed freely from his eyes. His knees gave out as he crashed to the ground sobbing.

"Hunter!" I ran to him, shielding his shaking body with mine as the demon came close.

Something weird was happening. It seemed like with every sob Hunter let out the demon grew younger. Slowly the wrinkles disappeared and smooth, supple skin replaced it. What was this thing?

I pulled a short dagger from my boot and kept it behind my back.

"I will kill your friend slowly, but you, well we have special instructions for you." He rasped.

"You've forgotten one thing." I smirked.

"And what might that be?" It had gotten so close, I could feel it's breath on my face.

"No one messes with my boyfriend." I said as I plunged my dagger into his chest, hilt deep.

The demon made a thick gurgling sound and slumped to the floor. Hunter's cries silenced and he looked up.

But he wasn't looking at me. He was looking as something behind me. More so someone behind me.

"Boyfriend?"

That voice was all too familiar, had haunted my dreams, and once upon a time whispered soft things in my ear that would send chills down the length of my body.

I knew that voice. But I didn't falter as I said,

"Jace."
