I bet most people remember the day they met their best friend. For me, even though I was young, this is true. Meeting Cody was definitely a memorable occasion.
I was 6 years old at the time and we had just properly settled into our new house when the doorbell rang. I ran to answer it and my mom quickly followed behind me since she didn't want me to answer the door by myself. When she opened the door, we were greeted by a lady and a boy holding a cake. The boy looked around my age.
"It's a girl" the boy whined and the lady gasped before lightly hitting the boy over the head.
"Be polite Cody," she scolded and he grumbled under his breath before reluctantly giving me a half smile.
"I'm Laura Adams. Welcome to the neighborhood," she told my mom with a smile.
"Thanks, I'm Amy Parker," my mom replied returning Laura's smile.
There was a moment of silence in which Cody and I stared at one another before Laura nudged her son prompting him to say something. Reluctantly, Cody made a face before stepping forward and introducing himself. I think he meant to shake my hand but he must've forgotten that he was holding a cake which resulted in him dropping the cake on me. We all silently watched as the cake slid down my top before landing on the ground. Laura gasped loudly and turned red with embarrassment while Cody burst out laughing like it was the funniest thing he had ever seen which ended up making me really mad. I stomped my foot in annoyance which only made him laugh harder. Obviously I did the next normal reaction and lunged at him which resulted in us wrestling in the garden. Our mothers were too shocked to shout at us which meant that we ended up covered in mud and grass.
"Emma!" my mom eventually shouted at the same time that Laura shouted Cody's name. Ignoring my mom, I continued to tackle Cody who had stopped moving. I took it as an opportunity to sit on him which caused his mom to laugh.
"Emma!" my mom shouted again and I sighed before getting up. Cody sent me an astonished look as I helped him up. "I'm sorry about the cake," he told me and I smiled. "Just don't do it again," I replied, making him smile too.
"I'm Cody," he said once again, holding out his hand. "I'm Emma," I answered, taking his hand.
"You're not so bad for a girl," he eventually told me. Still smiling, I walked back to the front door of our house to see that our mothers had gone inside already. They must've seen me helping Cody up and decided that we'd be okay alone.
*************
A few days after Cody and Laura had first shown up on our doorstep, our family's decided that it would be a good idea for all of us to have a day at the beach. Upon arriving at the beach, Cody and I were pretty much forced together seeing as we were the youngest and Cody's older sister couldn't be bothered with us. Cody took his kite and began flying it.
I watched him in fascination before he asked me if I'd ever flown a kite before. I'd replied no and he'd started explaining all about kite flying. He decided that explaining was too boring and ended up showing me what to do. Needless to say that one 6 year old teaching another 6 year old how to fly a kite turned out to be a bit of a disaster, and before we knew it, Cody's kite was flying away from us. Without thinking, we both ran after it, ignoring our parents shouting at us to leave the kite alone.
Sadly, we didn't catch the kite and surprisingly Cody was not mad about it. He told me that he had other kites at home and eventually we stopped walking when we realized we were pretty far away from our families. We couldn't see them either which made it even worse, and immediately I burst into tears. Cody tried to calm me down but I didn't stop until he grabbed me by the hand and started pulling me back the way that we had come.
On the way back, he told me all about the cartoons he liked watching and I found that we had some favorite cartoons in common. When we did eventually get back, we were in a lot of trouble... well as much trouble as two 6 year olds can be in. We promised to never do anything bad again.
The promise however, was broken a week later when we broke the window of my dad's new car after being told not to play baseball in the front garden. It had been Cody who'd had the smashing hit, but that didn't mean that I didn't cause my fair share of trouble. After the day at the beach with the kite, I knew that my friendship with Cody was pretty much sealed for a lifetime, unless you know, death did us part.
