You had no reason to go Tony's party. You were invited to every one but you hated them all. Parties were a waste of time and you were on of the most anti-social people ever to walk the face of the earth. But that didn't stop him from inviting you and trying his hardest to make you have a good time. Apparently they'd recruited some old friend of Steve's but that didn't make any sense to you. You reached the party 5 minutes early like always and dropped your shoes by the door upon entering. The rest of the team was already there as well and Nat greeted you with a bottle of beer.
"What's up Y/N?" Her black dress made her red hair stand out more than usual and her eyes were extremely bright.
"Nothing much. What about...you, Nat? You seem a bit happy." She smiled at you innocently. "Did you see Bruce or something?" You raised your eyebrows suggestively. She simply laughed and went to help Tony get the food. Yup, definitely Bruce. Steve walked in next, struggling to fix his tie. You laughed and walked over to him.
"Oh Steve, here. Let me help." He sighed and gave up surrendering his tie to you. You undid it and examined the print. "Really Steve? Airplanes?" He rolled his eyes and grabbed it from your hand.
"Yeah, that was Tony. I'm just not gonna wear it. I don't need a constant reminder of that...event." You nodded and wrapped your arms around his waist. He hugged you back and breathed in the scent of your shampoo. "Thanks for coming, I know how much you hate parties." You nodded, laughing a little.
"Well, hopefully this one will be more low key, considering the circumstances."
------
"Oh come on Y/N, you can't dislike parties this much." Tony exclaimed gesturing to your position at the bar that hadn't changed since the party started. Ignoring him you took a drink of beer and swung around to talk to Pepper, who was tending the bar at the moment."Sorry, Y/N. He's probably already drunk." You nodded and looked across at where Steve and Bucky were standing. They were laughing as they had been all night, just like best friends were supposed to. It made you a bit nostalgic to see the way they interacted after losing your best friend to a mission somewhere in Europe a year ago. She had taken a bullet for you and you hadn't forgiven yourself. Lost in thought you didn't realize that the boys had come up to you.
"Y/N, Y/N?" Steve waved his hand in front of your face. "Hello? Is anyone in there?" You shook your head clearing the memories of your best friend and smiled.
"Sorry Steve, just remembering some past...erm, events that happened." You could see the worry etched on his face. "Don't worry about me, that's why I've got beer right?" You tried to lighten the mood and push Y/F/N from your mind.
"Yeah sure. Anyway I wanted to introduce you to Bucky." You shook his hand and smiled brightly.
"Y/N, nice to meet you Bucky." He nodded and grabbed a beer from behind you. Glancing over at the dance floor you saw Nat who looked like she was having a great time.
Oh come on Y/N, you can't hate dancing that much.
'You don't get it Y/F/N, I'm an awful dancer.'
'Can't be any worse than me. Please? Come on." You sighed and followed her to the dance floor. You had ended up losing your self to the music and dancing well past 1 in the morning.Tears threatened your eyes at the memory and you swallowed, blinking them away fiercely. You could not cry here, especially in front of Steve because he wouldn't let it go.
"You too." He replied following your gaze to the Natasha. "Do you like dancing?" Startled at his question you shook your head.
"Oh no, I'm really terrible. Plus I haven't danced since...since, never mind. I just don't like it very much." Steve eyed you wearily obviously wondering what you were going to say.
"Since what Y/N?" His voice was concerned and you knew if you didn't explain you probably wouldn't hear the end of it. Steeling yourself for the emotions ahead you took a deep breath and explained.
"Umm, do remember that...thing in Europe?" He shook his head. You closed your eyes and tried to think of a way to explain it to him. "Well, my best friend was on a mission with me. We were pretty much unstoppable. We broke into a HYDRA base and she was covering me. I wasn't paying attention and missed a sniper. She jumped in front of me just in time but the shot killed her. I always felt it was my fault and I haven't gotten over it. I haven't danced since she died." Now the tears were spilling down your cheeks and Steve put his arms around you.
"I'm sorry, I know how you feel." Sniffling you nodded. Looking over at Bucky. He seemed very pale.
"Bucky are you ok? You went a little pale."
His blue eyes looked scared and angry."Do you remember what day it was?" He asked slowly.
"Of course. November 28th, 2015. 5:38 PM, exactly three days after her birthday. It was a Wednesday." His face turned to relief quickly. "Why?"
"Well you know..." He put his hand on the back of his neck and looked at the floor. "I was...I was a sniper and the whole freezing thing and the no memories." Dammit Y/N how could you forget?! Probably drunk.
"Oh my god! I'm so sorry I forgot about that. No it wasn't you, I killed the sniper. I ended up blowing that place to ashes."
"No, it's no problem at least you didn't freak out like most people." You laughed, having been so engrossed in talking to Bucky you didn't notice that Steve had left.
You talked for a couple hours, he had kept you mostly sober the whole night and you were grateful for his presence. "Hey Y/N, would you like to dance now?" Surprisingly you didn't feel embarrassed or reluctant."Sure why not?" He lead you out to the dance floor and you gestured for him to lead.
------
It was well past 1 in the morning when you and Bucky left, still laughing at each other's dancing skills. Wiping the tears from your eyes after you could breathe. You turned to him breathlessly."Thank you, Bucky, for everything tonight. I haven't danced like that in so long I forgot what it feels like." The moon was out and you could see his striking blue eyes perfectly.
"Neither have I, but to be honest it's been almost 70 years since I've had any time to dance. And your welcome, besides your not that bad of a dancer." He replied smirking. You rolled you eyes and hit his shoulder playfully. Smiling he turned to you and placed his hands on your shoulders. He started to lean towards you and you did the same, meeting in the middle. You melted into the kiss, the guilt you'd felt earlier leaving your body as you kissed him. After you broke apart you grabbed his hand and started off down the road.
"Guess I should go dancing more often then?"
