Author's note:

As always, for full reading experience, listen to the following songs:
-Ako na lang sa'yo by Karylle
-Gemini by Spongecola
-Kung Wala Ka by Hale

If there was one adjective people always described him as, it would be 'selfless'.

He remembers going to a family reunion, with his cousins fighting over a Gundam model being raffled off as a prize in their yearly gift giving. He faintly remembers his aunt going over to him as she handed over the toy as they announce that he was the winner. He stared around and met the gaze of his youngest cousin, with a fixated gaze at the Gundam. God knows how much he wanted that model for months now-and how he bugged his dad to buy it , and having it in his hands finally caused his heart to swell with so much joy- not until he saw his cousin.

"Sa'yo na lang. Di ba gusto mo din?" young RJ sheepishly asked his cousin. Casting him a puzzled look, the younger boy nodded quickly and reached out for the toy. Within minutes, his Gundam model was no more.

"Ang bait naman ni RJ, very good hijo. That's how it should be." His aunt chimes in, patting his head.
For years, his name RJ was associated with words like 'kind-hearted', 'loving', 'family-oriented', and 'humble'. People always saw him as the good child, the self-sacrificing kid. As long as he saw someone more in need than he is, he would gladly give what he had to make them happy. Growing up, it was what made his family, his fans and even his co-workers proud about him. For them, RJ was the breath of fresh air in the polluted world of showbiz.

In an alternate universe, in a different time, and when it came to a different person, he would've been selfless.

But not tonight. Not with her.

"Vanilla parin ba ang gusto mong flavor ng ice cream?" The love of his life asked as they were having dinner. And in what seemed like a couple of heartbeats, RJ itched to scream what he felt inside. He knew what she meant, because he was no outsider. He wanted to make her see how he craved Vanilla ice cream so much everyday, that if it was possible to trade Vanilla for water, to substitute Vanilla scent for his lung's oxygen, and to let Vanilla essence run in his veins instead of his blood, he would've done it. He wanted to let her know how Vanilla made him live.

How Vanilla made him human.

But in his silence, Vanilla seemed uncertain.

"Alam mo ba, may friend ako nung highschool. Sabi nya, 'Ang buhay parang ice cream, enjoy it before it melts.' Ang galing diba?" Maine continued, looking him in the eyes. He remained silent, because he knew that she knew. Maine was always a step ahead of him, more sensitive to others' feelings than he was. "Richard...natunaw na ba yung ice cream mo?" She asked, her voice breaking at the end.
