"Why would you say something like that?"

"Because it's true, Tom." I shake my head at him, avoiding his gaze for all of two seconds before having my eyes drawn back up to meet his again. Not only do I see disbelief, but worse, disappointment. Even that doesn't stop me. I have a point to make. "There are those that you can't help but notice when they enter a room. People that cause your breath to catch when they walk past." I pause in order to shrug as though the words don't wound me. That's the thing about truths: they're not always kind. "And then there are people that you have to be stuck on an elevator with for a few hours to notice."

His furrowed brow has deepened into something more than dismay. Have I managed to anger him? It might be exhilarating given any other conversational topic. "Now that's enough of that."

I barrel on despite his displeasure. "You, of course, are the former. And I'm - since the day we actually met I walked past and got nothing, I know which of the two I am to you."
