Chapter 9

Middle of the night...

Riker POV

I couldn't sleep. I was wondering what had happened with Jen when she was upset earlier. I decided to text her to see if she was still awake.

"You up?" I texted.

I got a response within seconds.

"Yeah. Can't sleep."

"You ok?"

"Not really."

"Do you want to talk about it?"

"I don't know."

I got out of bed, and snuck downstairs. I snuck out the front door, and across the street to Jen's house. I lightly knocked on her window. She opened it for me.

"Riker, what are you doing here?"

"I wanted to make sure you were ok."

"It's the middle of the night!"

"I know."

I shivered a little from the cold night air.

"Riker, get in here."

I took her hand, and she helped pull me into her room. She shut the window, and we sat down on her bed next to each other.

"So what's going on?" I whispered.

"Just annoying stuff."

"Like what?"

"I don't know."

"Jen, you can trust me, you know. You can tell me anything, and if you don't want me to tell anyone, I won't. But you don't need to keep secrets from me."

"I have a hard time trusting people, Riker."

"I know. But you can trust me. I promise!"

"Look. I know you're saying that and everything. But that's exactly what my ex and best friend said."

"What happened?"

"I don't want to talk about it."

I sighed.

"Well are you ok?" I asked.

"Sort of. I don't know..."

"Well why!?"

Jen sighed.

"Riker..."

"What?"

Her phone made a noise, and she looked at it. She looked upset.

"Jen, what's going on?"

"Riker, it's nothing."

"If it's nothing, then why are you crying?"

Jen was silent. I didn't know whether or not I was making things worse.

"I want to go for a walk," Jen said.

"Ok."

"I want you to come with me."

"Ok."

We crept out her window, and down the road to the beach. We sat at the picnic table.
