Chapter 16
Riker POV
"Riker, what's wrong!?"
I was standing on Jen's doorstep, crying. I felt embarrassed, but I couldn't stop my tears.
"M-my m-mom," I whispered, barely able to get the words out.
"What about your mom?"
"S-she was in a c-car accident."
"And? Is she ok?"
"T-they don't know y-yet!"
"Aw, Riker. I'm so sorry."
"M-my d-dad's driving us t-to the hospital. W-will you c-come with m-me?"
"Of course I will!"
Jen hugged me really tight. The hug only seemed to make me break down into more tears.
"Riker! Let's go!" Dad shouted from across the street.
We pulled apart from our hug, and Jen took my hand. We walked over to the van, and got in the back, behind Rydel, Ross, and Ryland.
Jen and I put on our seatbelts, and then I leaned my head on her shoulder, still crying. She took my hand in hers, and intertwined our fingers.
"It'll be ok, Riker," Jen whispered.
Later...
Riker POV
We finally arrived at the hospital. Dad went up to the front desk as we all sat down in some chairs over by the wall. There weren't enough chairs for all of us, so I made Jen sit on my lap. I wanted her close to me anyways.
Dad came back, and told us mom was going to be ok, and she hadn't gotten hurt very bad, but she'd needed to get stitches. And we couldn't see her yet. I felt so relieved about it. But I also felt extremely exhausted from crying.
Jen started wiping the tears off of my cheeks.
"I'm sorry for crying," I mumbled.
"Riker, it's ok. Don't feel bad."
"It's embarrassing..."
"No, it's not! It shows you really love your mom."
"Yeah, I guess..."
Later...
Jen POV
We were all allowed in to see Riker's mom. We found out that the accident wasn't her fault.
"So who's the idiot who crashed into her?" Rocky asked the doctor.
"His name is Mike Johnson."
My eyes widened.
"Wait! Is he a teenager!? With brown hair!?" I asked.
The doctor nodded.
"Can I please see him?"
"Yes. Follow me."
Riker was by his mom's bed. I glanced at him as I walked out. He was giving me a look as if to ask what I was doing.
I looked away, and followed the doctor down the hall. He led me into Mike's room. He was laying in bed.
"Mike!"
"Jen, what are you doing here?"
"I came with Riker. You crashed into his mom."
"Oh... Is she ok?"
"Yeah. She had to get some stitches, but she's fine."
"Good..."
"What about you? Are you ok?"
"Yeah. I needed some stitches since when I crashed, my windshield shattered. You can imagine what happened..."
"Yeah..."
I was still keeping my distance from him. I was slightly nervous being here alone with him.
"Jen, look. I came over the other day to talk to you. So can we talk now?"
I sighed.
"Yeah, I guess..."
I walked over, and sat down in a chair next to his bed.
"Look. I've been going to counseling for hitting you and stuff. I'm getting better. And I broke up with my girlfriend. I was wondering if you'd consider getting back together with me. And I know you're going to want time to think. But I promise, I'm different. You know I had family problems, and that's what was causing it. So I moved out. At least consider it. Please?"
"Mike, you punched Riker. How is that any different from how you used to be?"
"He was trying to pin me against the wall. That's how it was different."
I sighed.
"Please, Jen. I know I cheated on you, and I'm sorry. It was wrong, and I regret it so much. Please will you consider getting back together with me?"
I sighed again.
"Mike... I'm with Riker."
"But you were with me first. We have history, and you guys barely have any. Come on. Don't you feel anything for me?"
"Yeah... We dated for a while. I'm not over you yet..."
Mike smiled slightly, and motioned for me to come closer. I got up and sat on the edge of his bed. He took my hands in his.
"I still love you, Jen. Really. Let me take you out tomorrow night. Let me prove it to you."
I sighed.
"This isn't a good idea."
"Please? Trust me on this."
"Riker will kill me."
"So don't tell him."
Just then, the door flew open, revealing a very angry Riker.
"What the hell is going on in here!?" Riker asked, walking over to us.
I pulled my hands away from Mike's.
"Dude, I was just talking to Jen. Calm down," Mike said.
"Well we're leaving."
Riker grabbed my arm, and practically dragged me out.
"What the heck was that!?" Riker asked, once we were in the hall.
"What?"
"You were talking to him! You guys were holding hands!"
"Riker, he just wanted to talk."
"About what?"
"It's honestly none of your business."
"I can't believe you!"
"What!?"
"You're cheating on me, aren't you!?"
"No way!"
"You swear?"
"Riker, I'm not cheating on you!"
"Ok... I'm sorry for accusing you..."
"It's ok... You kind of scared me though..."
"How?"
"I'm scared you're going to hit me..."
"Jen, I would never."
"I know... I'm just not used to it ever since Mike..."
Riker put his arm around me.
"I'm sorry... I don't mean to get mad... I just really don't trust him," Riker whispered.
"I know..."
"We're going back home, so..."
I followed Riker out to their car, and got in the back with him. We didn't talk the whole way home.
