"We are going to attempt another piece involving the toads and ravens." Flitwick announced around mid-November.
"Yes!" Sarah Beth squealed from her usual spot in the middle of the soprano section. I looked up from my seat at the piano to see her eyes were shining.
"As I can tell, some of you are excited-"
"Can I have a raven like last time, Professor? Please?" She smiled her sickening smile.
"We'll see, Ms. Cumberland. Now, Ms. Snape, for this particular piece, we will not need an accompaniment. The animals will take care of that."
"Oh, okay." I shrugged. It's not like I wanted to be there anyway.
"For now I will need you to play parts, but once we learn it you will have to sing with us. To do that, I need to put you on a part."
"No." I simply stated, pushing a piece of long, black, greasy hair behind my ear.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Snape, you have to do something."
"I'll be playing parts."
"Yes, but only for a short time. Now, please let me at the piano." Reluctantly, I got up. He took my place. "Sing this please." He hit Middle C. I just stood there, staring at him. "Ms. Snape, you have to do this."
"I'm sorry Flitwick, but no."
I wasn't going to sing, and if he expected me to, he was crazy. I couldn't remember the last time I had sang. Even as a child, my father would quickly shush me, declaring that it sounded completely horrid.
"Ms. Snape, I'm afraid if you aren't going to follow my instructions, I'll have to ask you to leave."
My jaw dropped. Ever since last year, I had been working my bum off, playing these tone deaf oafs parts over and over and over, and this was the thank I got? An invitation to leave? If it hadn't been for me, they would never have even attempted to sing at the welcoming feast! And now he was telling me to just go?
The room went silent as every eyes turned to me.
"Gladly."
