About a week has passed since that day. It was still the same; Students would come to school chatting, joking, and discussing. However, there was one difference. The shy girl that had once done everything alone, now had a friend.
Still, none of the other people really noticed either of them. But, they did not mind. They were content just having one person happy to see them.
Now, everyday, Matthew and (Y/N) would meet up and walk to school together, they would talk together, make each other laugh, go to class together (when they had the same class), and study in the library together.
Even though (Y/N) had managed to become friends with Matthew, she still found it hard to actually open up and talk to him. She would listen to him talk, smile and laugh at his stories and jokes, and say a few words here and there, but she did not feel comfortable revealing information about herself.
Matthew could tell (Y/N) was uncomfortable whenever she talked. It made him feel bad. His new found friend was very insecure and had low self-esteem. He knew he was like that in a way, but seeing (Y/N) like that just made him feel terrible...
He wanted to help her. He wanted to make her feel good about herself. But he did not know much about these topics. But, he was able to come up with a plan.
One day after school, Matthew and (Y/N) were walking home from school together. "Hey, (Y/N)?" Matthew said as he looked over at her. She looked up at him. He slightly frowned. From this angle he noticed her slouched figure.
"Yeah?" she asked. "Erm..." the Canadian boy paused for a moment. "D-do you want to... Come visit for a little while?"
"V-visit?" (Y/N) stuttered, "Y-you mean like... A-at your house?" Matthew nodded and gave her a reassuring smile.
(Y/N) wasn't sure what to do. She was nervous, she had never been to another person's house before... Her first reaction would have been to say no and leave. But then she remembered Matthew was her friend, he seemed to like talking to her. She wanted to be able to get to know him better, but she didn't know how...
"S-sure... I-I'll go..." (Y/N) whispered. She wasn't sure if it would affect their friendship if she had said no, so she didn't want to take that chance.
Matthew smiled and said, "Great! Let's go, eh." Matthew took her hand and lead her toward his house. Again he felt that feeling he had felt before. He couldn't understand it. It seemed to only be there when he grabbed her hand...
Matthew lead (Y/N) to a big house. "Here we are," he says turning around to face (Y/N). "W-wow...," she said looking at the enormous house that towered before her, "T-this seems to be a big house for j-just you..." Matthew chuckles softly. "It would be... If it were just me."
(Y/N) stopped in her tracks. Is he saying that there is another person inside that house? She wasn't sure what to do. She had a hard enough time just talking to Matthew, much less a stranger...
"Is something wrong, (Y/N)?" Matthew asked, turning around to see her in a state of shock. (Y/N) snapped out of her thoughts. She had been thinking of what would happen if she ran and left. "N-no... I-It's just... I didn't know there was going to be s-someone else here..."
Matthew smiled nervously. "Sorry, eh. I probably should have told you aboot that before I dragged you here."
(Y/N) looked down at her feet nervously. "It's just my brother," he continued, "He's really nice. He could never hate anyone."
Matthew's words managed to cheer (Y/N) up a bit. "He probabaly just got home," he went on, "he goes to our school too."
Matthew reached into his pocket and pulled out his key. He opened the door and lead (Y/N) inside.
If his brother just got home it certainly didn't sound like it. The sound of shooting from a video game could be heard throughout the entire house. It was as if the boy had been home for hours alone and turned his TV on full blast, not expecting anyone else to come in hear the noise.
"I-is it always like this?" (Y/N) asked. "WHAT?" Matthew shouted, he couldn't hear her over the loud sounds (exactly how he knew it would happen.)
"I-Is it always this loud?" She said a little louder.
"I CAN'T HEAR YOU! CAN YOU SPEAK UP A BIT MORE?"
(Y/N) took a deep breath and yelled, "IS IT ALWAYS THIS LOUD?!"
This was the first time (Y/N) had ever raised her voice. It felt... Good... Good to let out some emotion. Matthew smiled and gave her an approving nod.
That went well... He thought having had his plan go accordingly And (Y/N) is smiling now. Not the sad smile she always had before, but a genuine smile. I-it's nice to see...
Matthew leads (Y/N) to the living room, the source of the loud noise. Matthew enters the room, but (Y/N) just stands in the doorway.
There on the couch sits a boy completely absorbed in his video game. He was about the same age as Matthew and (Y/N); he had dirty blonde hair with a small piece of hair curved up near the center; square-framed glass rested on top of his nose and baby blue eyes; and he wore a red and blue T-shirt with white khaki pants.
Matthew walked over to the opposite side of the room and grabbed the remote to turn down the volume. This makes the boy on the couch look up. He notices his brother.
"Oh! Hey, Mattie. When did you get here?" he says, quite loudly. "I just got back from school," Matthew responds.
The boy on the couch stretches and lets out a yawn. When he opens his eyes, he sees a girl standing in the doorway. (Y/N) jumped slightly at his gaze, no one had ever noticed her that quickly before.
The boy springs out of the couch and extends his hand out toward her. "Hi! I'm Alfred! And I'm the Hero!"
(Y/N) jumps at his loudness. "I-I'm (Y-Y/N)," she stutters and places her hand in his. He shakes it firmly. After, he doesn't let go, but instead stares at her. She isn't sure what to do, so she just darts her eyes around the room.
"Are you okay?" he asks, "You seem kinda jumpy and your voice is shaky..."
(Y/N) struggles to form a response, but Matthew comes up and puts his hand on Alfred's shoulder. "She's kind of shy, Alfred." That's putting it lightly...(Y/N) thought.
"Actually...," Matthew goes on, "I was hoping maybe you would be able to help me to make her feel more confident aboot herself, eh?" Matthew looks at her with a sympathetic expression.
(Y/N) wasn't sure how to feel. She was shocked, but she was also happy that Matthew wanted her to feel better about herself. She nods at him slightly.
Alfred looks at her and smiles. "Yeah, of course!" he exclaims, "I'm the Hero! And the Hero is always there to help people in need!" All three of them smile.
(Y/N) felt that her life was making a change for the better.
