Man Down

"Which one?" he said into my ear as we looked out over the crowd of people. Tears burned my eyes and my throat got dry and locked as I silently searched. I knew where the target was and I knew he knew that. He held me close to him and placed soothing kisses along the nape of my neck. "Tell me which one hurt you." he pleaded roughly into my ear, his hand rubbing along my tainted body as if I was still only impure by his touch.

"I- I don't see h- him," I whimpered out and we stood in the shadows. In truth I couldn't see this illusive 'him' but I knew that I would.

We stood for another couple moments in silence, shades on his eyes his breathing hard and ridgid.

And then finally 'he' appeared and it was known by my body tensing in fear and pain.

"Which one Onika," he asked again and grey eyes flashed before me.

Nicki sat up and stretched out her arms before sighing. She walked over to window and looked out to the beach that resided behind her family's home, taking in the calming smell of the island air. Nicki walked over to the doors of her room and opened them wide, leaning against the door frame, getting hit with the smell of the ocean and the warm breeze.

"Onika, baby are you up yet?" her mother called and she looked at the door only to see her standing there with her baby brother walking into the room.

"Ni Ni!" He he cheered to wake her up and saw that she was standing at the door of her bedroom. She smiled and turned so she could pick him up and swing him around in the air

"Good morning Ciah!" Nicki exclaimed and kissed his cheek as his arms wrapped around her neck. He giggled as she tickled him and their mother stood in the doorway, smiling at her children.

"Alright you two, someone in this room needs to get into his bath." Carol said and Micaiah pouted. Nicki laughed and set him back on the ground, the little boy crossed his arms and stomped out her bedroom.

"I don't wanna take ah bath," the little boy grumbled and Nicki shook her head at him. She then ventured into her own bathroom so she could get ready for the day ahead. She brushed her teeth, bathed herself and rubbed her favorite oils and lotion into her skin before stepping into her closet and getting dressed.

After which she made her bed and shut all her bedroom door. She passed her mother in the kitchen and walked out the back door. She was so focused on getting to her main destination that she was startled by the sound of her mother's voice behind her.

"And where are you going?" Her mother asked from the kitchen window when she saw her saw her daughter walking off.

"I want to go see a friend mommy." Nicki answered.

"Hmm, which friend?" She asked and Nicki panicked, thinking who's home, realizing that it was morning and there was no need to even think.

"Thembi mommy," she answered and heard a subtle 'oh' escape her mother's mouth.

"What are you and Thembi goin to do?"

"Uhm just relax mommy, you know... the usual. Maybe even go to the markets but probably not." Nicki answered and Carol took her eyes off her daughter.

"Oh alright, you be back on time." She said and Onika agreed before she released a breath that she didn't even know that she was holding in. She began walking down the road the dirt road but heard her mother's voice again.

"Onika." She called and girl froze.

"Yes ma'am?" She called back and turned around to look at her mother. Carol shook her head as she took in a breath.
