"Have you ever seen a flower die? Watched something that was once so beautiful, so full of life, collapse and rot from within?"

~ Victor Fries (Mr. Freeze)

Man, don't you ever just have that one day where you don't want to get out of bed at all? The day where you'd rather suffer at the hands of a super villain than go to school?

Well, that was me. Our first day back was a blessing as well as a curse. It would be a blessing because I would finally get away from my mother and Chad, who were going crazy with wedding planning. They were trying to include me in the whole process, to make me feel included, but I would rather be left alone than help my mother plan what salad dressings would be offered at the reception.

Planning a wedding was boring work, and I couldn't comprehend why someone would put themselves through all that kind of work just for one night.

Besides, I felt like the wedding was pushing me and my mom apart. Ever since she started dating Chad, and now that they were engaged, she'd been distant. She started to hate on supers (otherwise known as her own son), which I was sure was facilitated by him. She stayed out longer doing god knows what with Chad, leaving me to go out and fight crime to stop the ever-growing boredom of sitting alone in the apartment.

But, on the other hand, I wasn't ready to face school again. It wasn't only the boatload of homework that came with junior year, but it was also the people there. I hadn't seen Mary since she got back a couple of days ago, and I thought it would be awkward for her first day back. I mean – she just escaped capture by a psycho who convinced her she was in love. Was she even ready to be pushed back into normal life?

Not to mention the whole deal with Nicole. I knew she only enrolled herself into Eldredge to get close to Mary, to use her against us, so did that mean she wouldn't show up today? She was still a teenager, and she still needed to go to school.

And, if she did show up, what would happen? What would we say? What could we say?

I shook those thoughts out of my head. Nicole failed to kill any of us supers for the third time. Hopefully she would be on the run. The Obstructer wouldn't compensate that many failures on her part.

And that reminded me about Chad again. MAKSED (Monitoring of Abnormal, Kaleidoscopic, and Super Events Department) was the government agency dealt with the task of controlling supers, making sure none got too out of hand. They told us during their last visit that their main suspect for The Obstructer was Chad Hunter, otherwise known as my boss and future father-in-law, making things even more complicated. He was new to town and had tied to anti-super organizations like the Remedist Party. Not to mention that they traced a signal from The Obstructer when they caught one of his employees. The signal was definitely from DC, the bad side of DC where we both lived.

The Obstructer was making it his business to rid the world of supers altogether. He was responsible for hiring mercenaries and super villains to take out heroes, and then killing those that he hired. He didn't care about his employees, they were still the same super scum to him.

The Remedist Party had the same mindset, though they haven't initiated action yet. They are an offshoot of the Republican Party, though way more radical and so far right wing that they were almost fascist. They were led by Richard Head, who was called Dick Head by every sane media outlet. He was running for president, voicing the issue of the supers.

Now, most candidates don't like to bring up the super issue. Our constitution was not written in the mindset of what to do with super powered beings. But the government had to do something.
