"It doesn't matter how many fall, for new heroes will always rise to carry on, bringing all the resources, their skills, their talents to defeat the enemy."

I had a feeling I did something to upset Elise.

It might have had to do with the fact that I kissed her in front of all those witnesses as our alter egos and now our faces were plastered on every newspaper and TV screen, but I didn't think it was the entirety of the problem. The saying really was true. Guys always messed up somehow, and they never knew when they did it.

She kept giving me quizzical looks and biting her lip in deep concentration. I had to admit that she looked really cute when she bit her lip, but I still had to get to the bottom of the issue first.

So, I finally asked her what it was all about in the morning before school.

"Elise, did I do something wrong?" I asked tentatively, leaning against the brick wall outside of the school.

Her eyes widened a bit and I knew that I had hit the spot.

"Did I say something?"

She tensed and looked down. "Kind of . . . it's complicated."

"What? Whatever it is, I promise I'll fix it."

She suddenly shook her head. "No. That's not it. I don't think I want you to change what you said, but . . . it's complicated."

"That doesn't make sense."

She sighed and ran a hand through her blonde hair. "You just changed our entire relationship and you didn't even know it. Do you even remember what you said when you kissed me after the Beast attack?"

"No? Should I?"

She groaned and glared at me. Okay, now I was entirely confused.

"I don't get it. I did something that made you mad, but it also made you happy? You don't want me to fix it, but you also won't tell me what I did."

Elise let out a breath and crossed her arms. "Let's just say you told me three little words that redefined our entire relationship out of the blue when I was unprepared. And let's just say that I've never known what it feels like to express those words for another human being, so I don't know if I feel the same way yet. Does that sound too complicated?"

". . . A bit."

She let out another frustrated sigh as the school bell ringed. We would have to continue the insanely complicated conversation later.

We rushed into the school before some administrator or another stopped us. We wouldn't be punished too severely for being late, seeing as my least favorite administrator was on an extended leave.

In pre-calculus, Ian was staring daggers at the back of Nicole's head, like he always does. She hasn't talked to us since that first day, and rightfully so. I was pretty sure Ian would jump her if he was unsupervised around her. He was still very angry about what she did to Mary, and so was I.

There was nothing we could do though. We had no proof that Nicole was Andromeda besides our own accounts, plus, she held our secret identities over our heads. We couldn't get her arrested without our identities being released to the world, or to The Obstructer.

"You know you don't have heat vision, right?" I asked Ian as I sat down next to him.

He gripped his pencil tighter and never took his eyes off of Nicole. "Yeah, but I'm hoping I suddenly discover my heat vision at any moment. This way, the only casualty deserves it."
