Chapter 17, Date Night

"Where are we going?" The movie had been nice, I laughed a lot and Ryan Reynolds is a real hottie too. But even though the movie was good, things between me and Ethan were kind of weird. I didn't know how to describe it but it looked like he didn't know what to say and I didn't know either.

You see, I have never been good with boys and it didn't matter if they were just talking to me as a friend or as a potential boyfriend, I was always quiet. I would probably loosen up soon, but for now, things were awkward between me and Ethan and I didn't like it.

"It's a surprise."
"I don't like surprises." Why does Ethan constantly remind me of him? I want to get him out of my head, forget him and everything he did. "Besides, it's getting pretty late. Shouldn't we head home?"

"Nah, just follow me. You'll like it." Ethan got in the car and I followed him, sitting shotgun.

"Can I at least put on some music?" Maybe listening to some music that I liked could help me get a little bit more loosened up

"Sure."

I sang along silently whilst staring out of the window. After a couple songs, one of my favourites came on and I automatically got a little bit happier. "Heard you say, not today, tore the curtains down, windows open, now make a sound." Ethan sang along with the lyrics and I smiled at him.

"You know the words to this song?" I could feel the corners of my mouth going up and the sparks in my eyes getting brighter.

"Yeah, I like Twenty One Pilots."

"They're my favorite." I leaned with my back against the door to get a better look at him. His hair was getting longer and he really had a nice jawline. My eyes followed his muscled arms all the way to where his hands met the steering wheel. Ethan was wearing a black t-shirt, which, may I add, looked really good on him. I couldn't deny it, Ethan was one of the most handsome boys I had ever met.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" His eyes connected with mine and I immediately looked away.

"Sorry," I said. "I was thinking that you changed a bit since the first time I saw you."

"Oh yeah? How then?" He sounded surprised.

"Well, your hair got longer and you wear more black than you used to. It sounds weird, I know, but I just happened to notice it."

"Nice that you did." He smiled a genuine smile at me and looked back at the road. "We're almost there."

Ethan drove onto a little path surrounded by bushes and trees. It seemed kind of abandoned. "You're not going to kidnap and rape me, aren't you?" My voice was horrified.

"What, Katie no! I wan't to show you something."

I let out a deep sigh of relief, "Okay, good."

We got out of the car and started walking towards a little hill. Ethan gestured me to walk to the top and so I did. He was right behind me, following my every movement. It was already dark and I didn't see much so when I reached the top, I gave myself a little applause for not tripping.

"What did you want to show me?" Ethan grabbed my hand but said nothing. My hand in his made all the hairs on my arms stand up and I felt a tickle in my stomach. His hand was twice the size of mine but it felt known, reasuring.

"Close your eyes."

He pushed me a little more forward before telling me to stop. "You can open your eyes."

In front of me was a field, filled with the most beautiful flowers I had ever seen. When you looked a little further, you could see the whole city in all its glory.

"This is beautiful, Ethan." I smiled at him. "But why did you bring me here?"

Ethan sat down. "I like to come here when I want to think about stuff or when I feel the need to be alone. I saw you at school a couple of times at a place where no one comes, close to the football field and I guessed that that was your quiet space so I wanted to show you mine." He crossed his legs and I set down beside him.

"Thank you for showing me. I really like it."

"No problem. Why didn't you respond to my text actually?"

Should I tell him the truth? "'Cause I was scared that you would ignore me again afterwards. I couldn't get a hold of you and I never understood the things that you said or did. Sometimes you act like a total dickbag, sorry, and sometimes you act like this and I don't know what's the real you."

He visibly swallowed and nodded. "Yeah, sorry. We should probably go now." Why the rush all of a sudden? Did I say something wrong?
