Chapter 26, I hate this game

Bzz bzz.

My phone buzzed from somewhere underneath me. I had been locked up in my room all day, watching the newest Netflix series, Riverdale. I'm so in love with Jughead, I think he's the one. I threw off my blankets and with a loud tud, my phone made contact with the floor.

Please don't be broken or shattered. Please.

I quickly picked it up, relieved that it seemed fine and read the message.

Beautifullest boy ever: Look out your window

Me: Who the fuck is this?

Me: Btw, beautifullest isn't a word.

I changed the contact name.

Dumbest boy ever: It's Ethan.

Dumbest boy ever: And I know, but it is true tho. I am the most beautiful of all.

Me: Ego much.

Dumbest boy ever: Just come outside.

Me: Fine.

I quickly ran down the stairs and out of the house to find Ethan leaning against his truck. He smiled when he noticed me and straightened his back.

"What are you doing here?" I asked once I was close enough to him. I came to a stop when I stood in front of him, leaving enough distance between us. I don't think that I would be able to think straight if I stood too close to him.

"I was bored so I was wondering if you wanted to hang out."

"With me?" I asked, a little shocked. Why would the popular and totally handsome Ethan Dolan want to hang out with me?

"Yeah, we're friends, remember?" He winked, "Now get in. I know a nice place to go."

"Okay. Let me just say bye to my mom." She would kill me if I left without saying goodbye.

"I hate this game! I don't understand what I'm doing wrong!" I pouted and sat back down next to Ethan.

He just laughed, he had been laughing ever since I threw the first ball. That was three games ago. "As I told you before, you have to swing straight. You throw so awry that the ball may as well land on the other track." He said in between laughs. "Here, let me show you."

My eyes followed his lean figure. His muscles visibly tightened as he picked up one of the heaviest balls in the whole arcade. He walked to the track and threw the ball, throwing a strike. Of course.

"See, I don't get how you do that!" I jumped up, ready for my turn.

I picked up the lightest ball where my fingers could fit in (I first wanted to use a ball of only 2.5 kilograms, but my fingers got stuck because apparently the light ones are for kids. Unfair.) and got back in front of the track. I looked at the pins, then at the scoreboard (Ethan- 130, Katie – 42) and back to the pins. You can do this. I consisted of nothing but mere concentration as I threw the ball. It went straight to the pins.

"Yes, yes, yes!" I shouted and glanced at Ethan before turning to my thrown ball again. "It's gonna be a str- wait no! No, no, don't do that." The ball went straight for the gutter and I sat back down, not wanting to do this anymore.

"I hate bowling." I muttered.

Ethan chuckled and pushed me up again, "You can go again. You have one last chance. Maybe you'll reach 50 points."

I huffed, "Maybe this isn't the thing my awesomeness stands out in, but I assure you, I'm great at something." I threw the ball, not bothering to look where it would end up. Spoiler alert: the gutter.

Ethan and I sat down at a table somewhere in the back of the arcade after I bought us drinks. (The loser buys, ugh.)

"So tell me something about yourself." He said as he sipped his drink.

"My name is Katie Campbell. I don't have any siblings or pets, I like readi-"

"Not the boring stuff. Tell me something that nobody knows."

"Ehm, okay. I like cats more than I like humans, I suck at keeping in touch with my friends and I like to pretend that all this here," I pointed to everything around me, "is just a dream that I'm living in because I'm in a coma in my true world."

Ethan laughed as he looked up to me, "I did not expect that."

"Just think about it. Maybe none of this is real. Maybe I'm just a part of your imagination. Maybe you're in a coma and is this a sign to wake up."

"That could be true. But I kind of like what my imagination is making up."

"So you like my presence?" I asked. Things with Ethan were nice. I could say things without thinking about them first. He just accepted my weirdness. Or he is just responding now and after today he will never text or talk to me again. That's a possibility too.

"I like being around you." I could spot the different specks of gold in his eyes as he looked into mine.

Don't swoon.

"And I'm planning on being around you a lot more. "

Swoon. Swoon. SWOON
