"I can not believe that I am doing this." Kurt complained from his seat in the back of the car. Beside him, Blaine chuckled.
"Relax Kurt, I think this weekend will be fun." Kurt grumbled something under his breath in response. Blaine decided to ignore it.
"Easy Kurt, it's my birthday and I want to go camping." Burt said from the driver's seat. Carole hummed in agreement from beside him.
"It'll be fun you guys." She said as she turned around in her seat to better see the group behind her. They had rented a large van so they had more seats and more room for luggage. The seats were occupied by Kurt, Blaine, Carson, Chris, Finn, and Rachel.
"I think this weekend is going to be a blast, dad." Carson said cheerfully from his spot right behind Carole. Out of everyone besides Burt and Finn, Carson was the most outdoorsy. This being said, Finn wasn't particularly excited for the camping trip either.
"Personally, I think that this is a great last hurrah before graduation and before we go off to college." Rachel said, referring to fact that graduation was the following weekend. "I also think that within the..."
"I'm going to stop you right there, Rachel." Burt said as he interrupted her. "As of right now, and from this point forward, there will be no talk of college or anything school related during this trip. This is going to be a nice, relaxing weekend with no drama." Burt went to look back at everyone through the rearview mirror. "Got it?"
Everyone responded with mumbled agreements and a few head nodds. The car grew silent for a few minutes until Burt turned off the main road and started down a dirt path towards some camp sites.
"We're here!" Carole exclaimed with excitement. No one responded, but they all watched as the car pulled up to a small clearing among the trees. One by one, they climbed out of the car and started to unload some of the tents from the back.
"Come on, let's go find a good spot to set our tent up." Blaine said as he somewhat dragged Kurt behind him. Before they could get too far, Burt went and stood in their path.
"Woah! Not so fast." He said as the others started to gather around him too. "I have assigned tent groups." Complaints and wails of despair followed his words. Burt just smiled a little and pulled out a slip of paper from his back pocket. "Tent groups with be; Carson and Kurt, Chris and Rachel, Finn and Blaine. There will be no sneaking around after we have all gone to bed. Am I clear?"
Nobody responded, but with obvious frowns on everyone's faces, they went to grab a tent and walked further towards the clearing. They started to set their tents up along the line of trees towards the back. In the middle was a fire pit ring with logs strategically placed around it. Off to the side was an old grill.
It was clear that some people were better equipped than others when it came to nature. Kurt and Rachel stood off to the side as the rest tried to put their tents together. It was a long first hour filled with complaints, shouts, and death threats.
Kurt sighed from where he sat in the grass with Rachel as they watched on. "I can't believe that I have to spend the whole weekend stuck in the woods."
Chris grumbled as he struggled to connect two tent poles. "I can't believe that you two are making us do everything ourselves. There is no way this tent can be put together by one person."
"Hey!" Carson shouted a few feet away. He had just finished pitching the tent and was currently pulling a tarp over the top. "Speak for yourself."
Rachel rolled her eyes before she got up and went to help Chris. Kurt decided to go see how much progress Finn and Blaine had achieved. When he found them Kurt burst into laughter. Blaine was trapped inside the collapsed tent, flailing his arms in terror, as Finn ran around in circles trying to figure out how to get him out. Without thinking, Kurt pulled out his phone and started to videotape it. Finn still couldn't find the door of the tent and Blaine had started to yell for help. Kurt couldn't stop laughing. His eyes teared up a little at the priceless moment. Eventually, Finn managed to get the tent unzipped and freed Blaine from his prison. Blaine burst out of the tent gasping for air. Kurt decided to end the video. He was shaking so hard the video was getting blurry.
The moment was interrupted when Burt called everyone for dinner. While they had all been working on getting the tents set up, Burt and Carole had been grilling burgers and unpacking the rest of the car. Everyone gathered around the campfire with their filled plates and started to eat.
"This is very good Mr. Hummel. I've never had a vegan burger that tasted so much like real meat before." Rachel said as she took another bite out of her burger. Everyone else watched on in amused silence.
"I guess this isn't so bad." Chris added as he looked around their campsite once more.
"Just think, this weekend will be over before you know it." Burt said with a smile.
Kurt scoffed loudly. "It's only Friday dad. Do we really have to stay until Monday?"
"Of course! Hey, I know you're not excited now but tomorrow we are going to go fishing!" Burt exclaimed happily. His smile was big and toothy and none of the Hummel boys dared try to ruin it.
Unfortunately, the weather didn't feel the same respect towards Burt as his son's did. Not too long after everyone finished eating dinner, rain started to fall from the sky in big fat droplets. Quickly, they all took shelter in their tents and remained there until morning.
