In the morning, I ask Cara to watch Paige as I explore the neighborhood. As soon as I go outside, I see a horrifying sight. A man is holding a knife up to a child's throat. I run up to the man and push him aside. Now he's after me. Great.
I'm glad I thought to bring a gun. The man runs towards me, his knife ready to kill. I pull out my gun and shoot him. He falls dead and his knife lodges in to my foot. The little girl runs to me, her eyes filled with horror. She takes the dead man's hand off the knife and says ,"I can try to help you walk, if you want." "That's okay, your parents are probably worried about you," I tell her. She looks only a year or so older than Paige.
"My parents are dead. I live on the streets," she tells me. "Okay, then you should come with me," I tell her, trying not to focus on the awful pain in my foot. She tries to help me to the house, but she is so small It doesn't help that much.
We finally make it to the door. "It's Amanda, let me in!" I shout, my voice disguised by the pain. Adrian opens the door. Almost immediately, he sees the knife in my foot. He helps me to the couch then runs to the bathroom. I look over to the girl, and she looks terrified.
When Adrian comes back, his arms are filled with bandages. My mind is still on the girl. I wander if she would want to stay with us. Suddenly, an even more intense pain in my foot interrupts my thoughts. Adrian has taken the knife out of my wound and has started to take my shoe and sock off. He washes it with a wet cloth and then immediately starts to bandage my foot.
After he finishes, I tell the girl to come sit down. "What's your name?" I ask. "Charity" she says.
