Our plan was anything but perfect. Adrian could die. I could die. I don't even want to think about the other person who's life is at risk.
The control room is right in front of me. I try to tell myself that this is the only way to save Paige. This is the safest plan. It's not like I have any any other option anyway. Or do I? I don't have to listen to Adrian. I don't have to, but I am going to.
Adrian enters the control room first. The reason for this? He has a gun and I don't. The doors have no windows. I have no way of knowing what exactly is going on behind them. I mean, I could open the doors, but that could cause a bullet through my head, meaning I couldn't save Paige. I feel so useless out here while Adrian is risking his life.
About five minutes pass and I start to worry. Any minute now, Adrian is going to walk through the door. Any minute now.
Five more minutes pass. Still no sign of Adrian. Just when I think all hope is lost the door starts to creak open. "Our work here is done," says Adrian. "Don't we still have to refresh everyone's memories?" I ask. "Already done," he says.
We start to continue down the hallway when something we hadn't considered happening happens. We run into a real guard. "Aren't you on lunch break, newbie," the guard asks Adrian. "The boss gave me orders to transport this prisoner first," Adrian lies. "Well, why don't I handle this and you can go to lunch," the guard asks. A normal question, and it just might be our downfall. "I've got it, but thanks anyway," Adrian says trying to sound calm.
The guard and Adrian go back and forth like this for a few minutes. It is obvious to me who is losing. I tried to speak up but the guard said that if I didn't shut up bed shoot me then and there, then showed me his assault rifle to prove the seriousness of his words. I have no intentions of dying before I make sure Paige is safe, so I stopped talking.
I wish there was something I could do. I wish I could run and hide and take Paige with me. I know it is impossible. There is almost no chance that I am getting out of this alive.
