I can't believe what just happened. I thought we were safe- ish for now. It is obvious that we have to leave. I don't know where we can go. Adrian might have a plan, at least I hope so. Where else can we possibly go? We have been in two different neighborhoods, both claiming to be safe, and almost died. I can't keep Paige safe forever. That is the thought that haunts my mind.
What if Adrian is one of them? He has purple eyes for crying out loud. It wouldn't make sense though, aliens try to look as normal as possible. I am so stupid. I have started to trust him. He did save my life. He has been kind of nice. What if it is just a cover?
Paige. I need to get her out of here. Now. I know she isn't safe anywhere, but I can at least give her a fighting chance, right? I might not always be around to keep her safe. Without me, she would have no family left. Our mom doesn't know who we are. Cara could raise her if I die, but what if we both die? Charity also needs guidance. I think she likes me better, not that that is a good thing.
Paige is asleep. So is Charity. Charity is sort of my responsibility now, but Paige is my sister. I don't like picking favorites, but I am more concerned about Paige's safety than anyone else's. I start to walk up the stairs, not even feeling my injured foot. I don't matter right now, only she does. The need to protect her has taken over like a virus, and it can not be contained.
I don't even realize that Adrian is right beside me. Before I can open the door he says, "There is only one more place we can go." I jump at the sound of his voice. He looks me in the eye. "Headquarters." The mystery headquarters. The one I have been wondering about all this time. I hope it is safer for Paige. I don't care if I am not safe. I have sort of a mothering instinct over her. I can't wait to get her to safety. That's when I hear the scream coming from behind the door to the room Paige was sleeping in.
Cliffhanger!
