I'm very worried about Nat. I don't know who just called her, but she is shaken up badly. I desperately want to find out who that was on the phone. Whoever it was brought her to some very dark place. I have this feeling like I need to save her. I need to help her. My hand travels into my pocket for my phone, but I pause. I'm not sure if it's right to push her quite yet. It might scare her. I take my hand back out of my pocket and wander around the city a little.
I pass by store after store. Kay Jewelers. T.J. Maxx. Jos. A. Banks. I don't see any store worth exploring. I don't think I'm in the shopping mood. Not for me. I decide to bag the window shopping and head home.
When I get home, my phone rings, but I don't recognize the number. I answer it cautiously.
"Hello?"
"Captain Rogers." It's Nick Fury. I should have known. "I need to talk to you. Meet me downstairs. In the laundry room." The phone clicks off. He hung up.
Not knowing what else to do, I head downstairs. I don't understand what he is doing. SHEILD is fallen. We can't be doing any of this top secret mission projects.
When I get down to the laundry room, Nick is talking to Sharon Carter. He turns to me the second I enter.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"It seems that we have been assigned by the government a project. Very top secret," Nick says.
"I'm listening."
"You remember where Black Widow was trained, correct?"
I nod thinking of the Red Room. It left mental scars on Natasha that still hurt today.
"It seems that a group of girls from her level have formed a league under a remaining group of HYDRA members. The Russian Girls Assassin's League. Not a very original name, but nonetheless. They are planning something big. Can't say I know exactly what but-"
"You want me to find the group, figure out their plan, and stop them."
Sharon cuts in. "And you will be working with Agent Romanov and myself."
"Wait, does Agent Romanov know about this yet?"
Nick shakes his head. "I have not been in contact with her yet, but I plan on contacting her tomorrow."
"I don't think she should be working on this project," I say hesitantly.
"Natasha made very clear where her allegiances lie. I can count on her to stick with us. Not to mention, she knows their fighting style. She knows them. She can be a big asset to the mission."
I open my mouth, but Nick is already walking away.
"I'll see you around Captain Rogers. Don't do anything stupid. Agent Romanov should be in contact about the mission by tomorrow evening." With that, he leaves.
What I wanted to say to him was that it might be painful for Natasha to go up against girls who were basically her sisters. I didn't think it was fair of Nick to put this mission, with which she has such a personal connection, on her.
Sharon turns to me. "I know what you were thinking. About Nat, and you're right. But Steve," she says making eye contact, "Nick is also right. Natasha is tough. She can handle it."
I nod and turn away to walk back up to my apartment wondering how Natasha will react to this. I wonder if the phone call she got earlier was connected to this in any way. Maybe Nick had already talked to her about it. Maybe that's why she was so stunned.
