Shatter: A Marvel Fanfiction

I keep waiting to hear from Natasha about the mission. It's been a day since he said he would talk to Nat, but I haven't heard a word from her. I decide to pick up the phone and call her about it. It goes straight to voicemail. Her phone must be off. I find that weird. She never turns her phone off. I try again, but the same thing happens. I can't leave her a message about this. I don't want the mission to leak.

I walk down the street to Natasha's apartment building. She never mentioned whether or not she had any plans today. I hope she is home. I knock on her door and wait. No answer. I knock again, but still no answer. I sigh and go back downstairs to the lobby. Maybe the doorman saw her leave.

I walk up to the front desk and pull out my phone to find a picture of her. "Excuse me," I begin. The doorman turns around from his computer.

"Yes? How may I help you?" he asks pleasantly.

"Have you seen this girl? She lives in this apartment building. Do you know if she's here?"

"Yes sir, I have. The last time I saw her, she had a big duffel bag. Said she was going on a trip. Didn't say where or for how long, but judging by the size of that bag, she's going to be gone a long time."

I am surprised. Natasha is a planner. She would have mentioned a trip, wouldn't she?

"You her friend or something?"

"Yeah."

"She never mentioned it to you, did she?"

I shrug and shake my head. "No. She didn't."

"If I see or hear anything, I'll give her a heads up that you were looking for her."

I smile at the doorman. "Thanks a lot. Bye."

"Have a good day. Good luck finding her." He winks.

I walk back to my apartment bewildered. Why would Nat leave so suddenly? I wonder if this has to do with that phone call or if Fury told her about the mission and it scared her. I should probably let Sharon know that our partner is MIA.

I knock on her apartment door. She doesn't answer either. This makes me very worried. Has our mission been found out? Has HYDRA and the Russian assassins taken Nat and Sharon? I am still mulling things over when I go into my own apartment.

"Steve." The voice pulls me out of my thoughts. It's Sharon. She and Fury are sitting on my couch.

"Did we have a meeting I wasn't aware of?" I ask.

"Steve, we have some changes to the mission," Fury says. "Sit."

I sit down on the chair next to the couch. "What's going on?"

"I tried to contact Agent Romanov this morning, but I had no answer. I went to her apartment building, but she didn't answer the door. So I sneaked in, but she was gone. Half her clothes were missing while the other half was scattered everywhere on the floor. Her phone was on her nightstand turned off. Pantry almost empty. Bathroom cleaned out. Keys gone too. She's gone."

"You're kidding. Why?" Sharon asks. Clearly Fury waited until both of us were present.

"We don't know. I plan on analyzing her phone to see her latest conversations, texts, anything," Fury says holding up her phone.

"What about the mission?" I ask.

"You two continue to search for information on HYDRA and the Russian assassin group. They could be anywhere, and if Nat is on the run, she might be running from them. If Nat is on the run, they might be here already."

That's when it hits me. "Is it possible that they contacted her? What if they asked her to join?"

Sharon catches on. "They might have threatened her or something, and that could be why she's gone."

"I'll look through her phone and figure it out. Tonight. We need our full team. We need Romanov."

Sharon and I nod in agreement.

Fury hands both of us a sheet of paper with an address. "Tomorrow morning, this is the office where you can get some information. I'll be there and let you know what's the deal with Romanov."

Fury leaves the apartment without another word. Sharon and I are speechless. I still can't believe that Nat just left.

Sharon feels the same. "I can't believe she's just gone," she says.

I nod. "We need to find her. The mission won't go well without her.
