Checking out was quick and easy especially since I paid with cash. The lady gave me a funny look, but I don't care. I got out of there as quickly as possible, jumped into my car, and drive off. Hopefully I covered my tracks well enough.
I drive for a few more hours. I find myself surrounded by desert. Perfect. I can easily lay low here. Somewhere around here there has to be some unpopular resort or cabin I can chill in. One that's somewhat clean. I'll need a television to keep track of the news in case anything shows up about HYDRA and the Russian assassins in the media. And if anything were to happen to Steve and the Avengers the media, particularly the news would be all over it.
I finally find a resort, and it looks nice but empty. Very empty. I pull into the parking lot and head to the area for check in.
"Hi! Welcome to the Lone Lotus Resort!" the girl behind the counter says in a way too perky voice. "How may I help you?"
"I would like to check in for a little bit."
"Great! How long will you be staying?"
I think for a moment. I guess I will start with a week and see what happens. "One week."
"Okay! Funny how you come. Nobody ever shows up this time of year. Everyone in work and school. Nobody takes vacations now."
Judging by the look of this place I didn't think anyone would come here anyway. I smile and respond. "Well it's a slow time of the year. You'll get more people around soon."
"All right I need your name and payment information."
"My name's Natalia Roman, and I'm paying with cash."
The girl looks bewildered, but she doesn't ask questions. No one asks questions that's what I've learned. She gives me the keys and tells me to have a nice stay, but her perky voice is gone.
I get into my little condo and look around. It's a little nicer than my hotel. The bathroom is bigger and just as clean, and the bed doesn't have bedbugs. I can deal with this for a bit. I take a deep breath and drop my bag next to the bed. I flop down on it tired. I've been driving for a long time.
I don't have very much time to recuperate. A dark figure crashes through the window shattering it and lunges straight for me. I swing my leg out in a kick which gets blocked. I roll away from the figure, out of bed, and onto my feet ready to fight. The figure- looks like a woman- lunges again in a forward somersault and kicks at my ankles. I jump over and on top of her to pin her down, but she is fast and rolls away. She kicks me in the back of the head sending a shock throughout my body, but I shake it off. She punches, but each one gets blocked. I grab her wrist and twist it behind her back, but I am rewarded with the other elbow in the stomach. I jump on top of her and get her in a chokehold. I am flipped onto a table.
I realize I recognize this fighting style. I learned it myself back in the Red Room. We are equally matched. I need to know who this is, so I feign going to for the legs, but at the last second leap up and pull of her mask.
I am shocked to find out who is attacking me. Ashley.
She takes advantage of my shock and grabs me again, trapping me in a hold. She beats me against a wall yelling that she warned me. That I should have joined. She pulls out something. I think a grenade. She tosses it towards the door and bolts back out the window leaving me lying beneath it. That's the last thing I saw before the explosion, and everything went black.
