Panting hardly, we managed to queue up behind the line of couples who were chatting excitedly for the competition.
“You think we made it?” Cole asked, gasping for breath.
“I think so; there are four couples here, so it’ll make us the fifth one right?” I questioned, crossing my fingers, hoping that we can participate. Barbeque was waiting for me!
When the couple in front of us took their number tags and strolled away, we came face to face with that stout little man. His moustache was more like whiskers, and his slitty eyes stared at us for a few seconds before breaking into a wide grin, flashing his pearly white teeth. Yuck, he reminded me of Garfield.
“Congrats! You guys are the fifth couple! Lucky you guys!” He nudged me, his grimy hand brushing against mine, making me shun him. Cole took me by the hand, and hid me behind his back defensively.
“Ah, I see, protective boyfriend eh?” His nose flared as his face was contorted into a hideous grin.
“No, we’re si-“I wanted to say ‘siblings’. It kind of horrified me to think that Cole and I were…in love. But Cole reached out for my mouth with his hand and muffled my voice before I could continue. Mr. Garfield raised an eyebrow at us.
“Uh, what she meant to say was…we are…si-riously in love!” Cole laughed it off nervously, shooting me warning looks. Oh yeah, this was Couples Only. We had to fake our relationship or we would be eliminated. Dang it, the thought of acting all mushy with Cole sent shivers to my spine.
Once we had written our names on the registration form, purposely leaving out our surnames, Mr. Garfield beckoned us to the first destination with a smile. Cole grabbed my hand and intertwined his fingers with mine. I stared up at him in horror.
“Don’t hold my hand like that! Only couples do that!” I slapped his hand away.
Sighing, he reached for my hand again. “We are a couple.” He hissed through his gritted teeth.
“Oh yeah…” I tightened my grasp on his hand, a blush blossoming on my cheeks.
I peered around at all the contestants, trying my best to get their faces into my head.
“Hi, we’re Amy and Josh,” A couple strutted towards us. Amy had golden dead-straight hair that ended right above her shoulders, and she wore a low cut blouse and a short mini skirt that showed off her butt. She was winking at Cole, who of course, being the womanizer he is, winked back flirtatiously. Wait a second; they were hitting on each other?
“We just wanted to wish you two good luck.” Amy purred, her gaze not once leaving Cole’s face.
I felt so tempted to give that bitch one big tight slap. The nerve of her to hit on my…brother. That sounded wrong, and felt wrong. Well, she had a boyfriend, and she was flirting with Cole right in front of him? I looked up at Josh, who was too busy checking his hair in the side mirror of a car, that he didn’t notice—or didn’t care—about taking Amy in hand.
I had to do something to stop this. I didn’t know what came over me, but I just felt my body bending over to Cole and next thing I knew, I gave him a peck on the cheek. Amy and Cole stopped making googly eyes with each other and I felt their stare now on me.
Oh my gawd. What the hell did I just do? Did I just…I can’t believe it. I freaking kissed Cole! I mean, it’s just on the cheek but…why did I do it?
By the time I stopped stoning away; Amy and Josh had already left.
Cole looked at me, a mortified expression on his face. “Did you just…” He touched his cheek.
