"All I'm saying is that I don't understand why you are wasting your Saturday at the Library, of all places," James tried to defend himself. I rolled my eyes.
"It's not wasting the day if I'm being productive. I enjoy it," I countered, and he scoffed.
"Enjoy it? Who enjoys the library?" Sirius quipped. I sighed. I love these guys, but they can be so obnoxious sometimes.
"Guys. I'm going to the library for a while, and that's final. Why don't you, I dunno, go prank Slughorn or something?" I offered, and they perked up.
"That sounds great! Come on, Peter, we're going to go prank old Sluggy!" James exclaimed, and they ran down the hall in the opposite direction. I shook my head, chuckling as I entered the library.
I browsed through the shelves for a bit, not sure exactly what I was looking for. I need up just grabbing a few different books to read while I was there, not really sure what I had chosen.
Sitting down at a table, I began to read a book about the history of the Ministry of Magic. It was actually not as boring as it sounds, trust me. I was so engrossed in the book that I wouldn't have noticed the person that ran into my table if they hadn't fallen on top of me.
"Oof! Oh my gosh, I am so sorry, are you okay?" I heard them say, scrambling up and standing in front of me. I looked up, not particularly bothered by the light girl. I was actually surprised to see the quiet Ashlynn Elmer standing in front of me. I raised a brow.
"I'm fine. Are you okay?" I responded, noticing that she was rubbing her head slightly. She smiled sheepishly.
"I'll be alright, I just hit my head on that case as I fell," she stated casually, but my eyes widened.
"That could be serious! What if you have a concussion? Quick, what's two plus two? Do you know the date? What house are you in? What's my name? Who-" She cut me off by laughing.
"Remus, I'm fine. It wasn't even that hard of a hit," She assured me. I felt my face heat up slightly, and I rubbed my neck.
"Oh, uh, alright then, I guess. Sorry," I mumbled. She shook her head, smiling. Sitting down next to me, she picked up the book I had been reading.
"What'cha got here? Ohhhh I've read this. It's pretty good, isn't it?" She stated casually. I smiled, glad we could talk about something less awkward.
"Yeah, it's pretty interesting. Much less boring than I thought it would be, although I've always been more inclined toward fantasy," I responded. She picked up the other two I had picked, reading the backs before shaking her head.
"You'll hate these, then. Here, come on. I think I can find something for you," She claimed, standing up and walking off into the shelves. I quickly followed her, watching as she returned the books to their places. She deftly navigated her way through one of the shelves, before finding what she was looking for.
"Have you ever read this? It's a classic, and one of my personal favorites. It's called 'Alice in Wonderland'." She handed it to me, and I quickly read the back. It looked pretty interesting.
"No, I haven't. It looks good, though. Thanks." I smiled at her, and she grinned, her eyes sparkling. The calling of her name by one of her friends grabbed her attention, and her smile faded as she san her hand through her hair.
"Well, I guess that's my cue to leave, then. I, uh, I hope you enjoy the book." She muttered. I looked at her, confused.
"Why do you let them parent you like that? They're your peers, not your bodyguards," I pointed out, and she sighed.
"They're actually good people, and they don't treat me like dirt. You're probably the only person outside of Slytherin that doesn't hate me," She reminded me. I had actually forgotten that she was in Slytherin for a while.
"Oh right. You know, you don't act much like a Slytherin. You're too..." I trailed off, not knowing the word I was looking for. She smirked.
"I'm too what? Quiet? Innocent? Nice?" She scoffed, "I know. The only reason I'm in Slytherin is because I'm ambitious and I can be really, really sly. Trust me," She promised. Her name was called again, and rolled her eyes playfully.
"Well, better go and see what they want, before they send out a search party." She joked, and I chuckled as she began to walk off.
"Thanks again for the book. See you around," I called, and she grinned and waved from the exit of the library. Behind her were four sour looking Slytherin, all of whom glared at me before turning and stalking off; Ashlynn skipped behind them, looking like a small child following a bunch of angsty teens around.
She was a character, that Ashlynn Elmer.
But hell, did she intrigue me.
