Jace's POV:
Three weeks later,
I had missed her so much, and I missed her even more with every time my eyes landed on her.

One night together wasn't enough, and we both knew it. Something was bothering her, but when I swooped in, she was happy. Maybe things aren't doing to well with her and Caleb. After all she did say he never kisses her. She'll come around soon.

We just need to catch up on old times, maybe get some coffee, or go out for lunch.

My phone vibrated in my pocket, and I quickly pulled it out, hoping it was Melanie. But instead it was my dad.

Dad: Mom's back in the hospital, she'd like to see you in the next few days just in case.

I sighed, and pressed my fingers to my temples. Then I stood up and knocked something off of the table, making it shatter into pieces. Tears began to fill my eyes slowly, and I landed face first onto my bed. Why do the girls I love the most leave me?

I sent out a text to my friend Zach, telling him I'll be gone in a few days. But the answer I got back in about 30 minutes, was a knock at the door.

Slowly, I got up and unlocked the door, opening it.

Melanie quickly came in, wrapping her arms around me tightly. She calmed me down. The smell of strawberries flowed around her, making me take a deep breath in.

"It's ok, Zach told me." She said, but she didn't stop, "I'll go with you."

"You will?" I slowly pulled away a bit to look at her face.

She was serious as she nodded, and her facial expression showed me.

"Is Caleb ok with it?" I asked with a more sad tone.

"He'll manage, I told him I'm helping you," Melanie gave a small smile, making me smile too.

Three days later

Melanie and I sat next to each other on the airplane, heading off to New York. It was going to be a long plane ride but I was fine with that.

Both of us were pretty quiet, until I started up a conversation. "Thanks Mel, it means a lot."

She turned her head away from looking out of the window, and gave a small smile, "You're welcome. I get to meet the wonderful people who made," she waved her hand in front of me, "this."

With that I chuckled, and put my hand in hers, intertwining our fingers. It seemed as if she jumped at our touch, but she didn't pull her hand away. She just tightened her fingers with mine.

It was dark on the plane, as it was outside, and our hands were still laced together. Mel's eyes were closed, and her breathing was slow.

An old lady who was a passenger walked down the isle past us, but she stopped and smiled, "what a cute couple, you guys are." Then she walked away.

Melanie opened one eye at me, quietly laughed. I looked at her and smirked.

"Did you hear that, babe." I joked. Maybe I wasn't joking. Calling her babe made her fingers sweat onto mine. By the time I finished my words, her eyes were closed, and she playfully shook her head.

The plane landed, and we got off. Inside of the airport, it was packed. But we managed to get our bags from the baggage claim, and rent a car. I drove to the hospital with Mel, silence filling the car.

Quietly, we walked together through the hospital, up the elevator, and checked in. I tensed up, a bit nervous.

"Hey, it's ok," Melanie gave a small smile, then grabbed my hand. With our fingers laced together, we walked around until we found my moms room.

I saw her laying there, looking quite alive. As the door squeaked shut, her head shifted in our direction, and she smiled at us.

"Awe look at my sweet baby, come here and give your mother a hug!" She croaked.

Her arms raised to hug me, with all her IV's and wires attached. She felt cold, so I put her blanket over her.

"Now, who's this pretty girl?" Mother looked towards Melanie.

"I'm Melanie, pleasure to meet you," Mel extended her hand, but instead of a hand shake, she got a hug.

My dad came in the room, happy to see us. I gave him a hug, and he gave Melanie a hand shake.

Dad and I drifted into a conversation about the latest news. But I could hear mom talk to Melanie, who pulled up a chair to moms bed.

"It feels like we've met before, Jace has talked so much about you." I heard my moms voice, and closed my eyes tightly, sighing, slightly embarrassed.

Mel chuckled, and gave a sweet look over to me.

It got late, and we had to leave the hospital. So we kissed my mom goodbye, and found a hotel that had an open room.

The city was packed, and this was the only close hotel that had vacant rooms, but the room only had one bed.

"I'll sleep on the couch," Melanie said, coming out of the bathroom with her pajamas on. She was adorable in her tank top and snoopy pants.

"No you can have the bed," I replied, taking my shirt off. My pajama pants were already on.

Her eyes shifted towards the balcony, and she walked out. In the wind, her hair blew around, and she took in a deep breath, taking all the fresh air in.

After putting on an oversized, fuzzy jacket with a big zipper going down it, I stood next to her, looking at the busy city below us. Melanie shivered, and goosebumps covered her arms.

So I unzipped my jacket and carefully zipped Melanie inside of it with me.

Authors note:
So..? They're in a jacket. Melanie and Jace are far, far away from Caleb. Do you think anything will happen with Mel and Jace? Maybe Caleb has something planned. Comment predictions below!
