As Ivy pulled me away from the bloody lawn, I was in shock. To think that at one time I thought that the picture of a heart was bad.
I tried to erase the memory of the blood, and the dead bodies out of my mind. But every time I closed my eyes I relived it. I heard the screams of the officers and the loud 'boom' of the grenade. I saw the blood of the men and women on the grass and their lifeless eyes staring at me.
"Stop right there girls!" The kidnappers voice boomed from across the yard. "One more step, and this one blows your heads off."
Me and Ivy stopped moving and turned around.
"Come closer." He ordered.
Ivy slowly pulled me towards the man. I was shaking to much to think for myself. It was as if all of this was happening to someone else, and I was just watching.
When we were just a few feet away from him, Ivy stopped. The man gave us a sick grin and pulled us off the yard and towards his vehicle which I could now see was a large, white four-door van. He shoved us towards the trunk of the van and got into the drivers side.
"Now." I whispered to Ivy "Lets make a run for it."
"No." She answered. "He'll just hurt someone else."
"We have to or he'll hurt us!"
"I'm not gonna let anyone else die because of me Emma! It's hard enough that I'm gonna live for the rest of my life knowing I've killed these people!"
"You didn't kill them. " I reassured her.
"That horrible man did."
"Only because we tried to escape!" She retorted. "And if we escape now, more innocent people will killed. More families will be torn apart, and we will be the reason. Is that what you want Emma? It's what's gonna happen if we run."
"But if we don't run-"
I was cut off by sirens. The sounds of fire trucks, ambulances and police cars filled the air.
The kidnapper swore and honked his horn, a clear sign that we were supposed to get in the truck.
"Well what's it gonna be Emma? Do you want to have a chance of life by gettin' in this truck, or to have certain death by gettin' captured by the police? You said that they're charging you with murder. The punishment for that in this state is death."
I could hear the authorities closing in. I didn't have much time to decide.
"Well?" Ivy said. "Make up your mind."
I sighed. "O.K. But we have to escape the first chance we get."
"Deal." Ivy agreed.
"Let's go."
And with that we jumped in the truck.
