I couldn’t just leave Kaytlin.

She had saved my life more than once, and one of those times she hadn’t even known me.

My arm throbbed in agony, but I didn’t let her slide from my grasp.

“Don’t try to run,” The kidnapper yelled gleefully. “You’ll only end up dying more slowly.”

I ignored him concentrating on the difficult task of just walking. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot, -c’mon, Emma. If she could trip a kidnapper with a bullet in her stomach, you can keep walking.

And I did. But I didn’t know how much longer I could keep walking. One look at the blood seeping through Kaytlin’s shirt though, and I knew I had to.

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

My vision was getting blurry. I knew I was losing a lot of blood.

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

I had made it back to our parent’s graves. Had I really only made it that far. I had about twenty feet left to get to the parking lot. No, it must’ve been at least twenty miles. Who knew? It was getting so hard to tell.

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

Tears stained my vision. I couldn’t do this. I was so tired… So tired.

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

I’m sorry Kaytlin, I’m sorry.

Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot.

I looked back. The killer was raising his gun. Everything was happening so slowly. Darkness was threatening to blot out my vision.

I blocked Kaytlin the best I could.

I’m sorry…

Right before he pulled the trigger, someone jumped in front of the gun.

And the last thing I saw before the darkness washed over me completely was a rose the same color as the blood that was now everywhere.
