It wasn't as boring in our house anymore.
Before Kaytlin moved in all I really did was watch TV, read, and play with my adorably annoying dog, Nemo. Yes, my dog is named after a clownfish. Laugh it up.
With Kaytlin here things were more fun. It was taking some time for her to get adjusted to living with a family, but she was handling it well. However she still jumped every time she heard a loud noise, and every time accidentally spilt something she flinched like she expected someone slap her.
Overall though we both loved it here.
There was one small thing though. The nightmares. I would wake up screaming every other night thinking I was back in that old house or in the cemetery. Seeing the blood. The bodies.
The kidnapper.
It still felt so real. A wound that never scarred over.
I didn't know if Kaytlin had them too. I hoped not. I was guessing that, for me, they'd always be there. Memories of a time I wish that I could forget, but knew I never would.
Even so, we could still act like a normal family. A normal family thst fights over stupid, non important things.
Which is why at eight o' clock at night Kaytlin and I were fighting over the television remote.
"You got to watch it yesterday!"
"No, that was last week, Emma! You were watching CSI yesterday!"
"That was right after school! Last night all you were doing was hogging it!"
My dad sighed as he entered the room. He had just gotten home from work and clearly this wasn't what he wanted to hear.
"Girls, can't you just find something else to do?"
"No."
"Well to bad. Everyone out of this room. Take the dog on the walk, or something productive."
Distantly I heard the door bell ring, but I ignored it. Later I would have wished that I had savored the moments before where my life had some degree of normalcy.
My dad went to answer the door. Kaytlin and I followed him, grumbling.
Standing in the door way were the two cops that had showed up a month earlier bringing me into this whole mess. I glanced at Kaytlin who was wearing the same expression of confusion that I was.
"Mr.Tulestone?" The first cop asked.
"Yes?"
"We must have a word with your daughters. It's urgent." She looked at me pitifully. "It concerns the previous events that have transpired."
"Of course, please come in." My dad showed the way into the entry hall. The policewoman didn't waste any time.
"I'm going to be frank with this. The suspect we were holding in custody, the one who was claimed to have kidnapped Kaytlin and Emma, well, we're not quite sure what has happened. A few hours ago we went to do a routine check of his cell and he wasn't there. All we know is that it was clearly a professional job."
Kaytlin narrowed her eyes. "So you're saying..."
"Yes. He is out on the run. He's escaped." She gave Kaytlin and I a look of sympathy. "And his first move will be to finish what he started with you."
