I yawn and get into my bed. Garroth is in another room, but Zenix is right across from me. He is fast asleep, but something seems off. I fall asleep for a bit. It is exactly midnight when I wake up to rustling noises. I open my eyes and look over at Zenix. He seems fine... I close my eyes again and try to go back to sleep. But I hear panting and I get up and look at Zenix. He is sleep-talking now. But it's not good.
"You... why do you... no stop... NO STOP!!!" He is almost screaming, "I will do anything... just don't hurt them... " he pauses, "Fine, I will! Watch..." I almost faint from terror when Zenix scratches his arm with his nails so badly, that his arm begins to bleed. I... I have to get Garroth! I jump out of bed and sprint toward where he is sleeping. I shake him hard and he wakes up with a start.
"What in the name of Irene is..."
"It's Zenix!" I interrupt him. He takes no time to respond and he gets out of his bed and follows me. I shudder when I see that it is worse. He is yelling now.
"WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?! MY LIFE?! JUST STOP HURTING THEM!!!" he yells. The scratch on his arm is worse too. It looks like he was cut with a sword. Garroth gasps at the scene and turns pale. Zenix continues to talk. "HE NOR SHE DESERVES THIS! JUST TAKE MY LIFE INSTEAD OF THEIRS! I WILL DO WHATEVER YOU WANT! JUST LET THEM SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AGAIN!" Now I really feel like I am going to faint. Uh, I feel dizzy. He... he is dreaming about... I fall over into Garroth's arms and the world turns black.*****
Uh. What happened? Ow, my head hurts! Wait... Zenix! I turn and Garroth is sitting next to me on the floor.
"What happened?" I ask.
"Well, last night you woke me up from a very comfortable sleep and said something was wrong with Zenix, and I followed you in and he was scratching himself like a madman, and he said words untranslatable and you fainted and I put you in your bed and Zenix is doing Zenix things, like sleeping... "
"I... I am sorry, Garroth. But this is... this is really bad," I start to panic, "Thankfully he is still asleep."
"There is nothing to be sorry about. Sleeping well isn't in the job description for being a guard, so that was fine. And I could tell that it was important and bad what he was saying since you sorta fainted... yeah." I hold my head.
"I can't believe he can still get to him..." I mumble, "Garroth, can I tell you something that you will never tell Zenix, EVER?!"
"Yeah, shoot."
"Okay..." I take a deep breath, "So, in God Grave, before I met Zenix, there was this boy named Knox. He was a very strange child- even stranger than Zenix. He always dreamed of being... a Shadow Knight. No little boy should dream of being evil, but he was having rough times in his life... anyway, he wanted me to be a guard with him so we could live together and love each other as Shadow Knights, but I didn't love him, nor did I want to be evil. I stopped being around him, for he got worse. I met Zenix and became his friend and Knox felt betrayed. He took it all out on Zenix and has terrorized him his whole life. Now, he is somehow getting into his nightmares. I know that because he said something about never seeing the light of day. Knox would say that to him." I stare into Garroth's eyes, "Please don't tell Zenix. He has no idea."
He takes a deep breath. "Why would I tell Zenix this... if you wanted him to know you would've told him already. So no, I won't tell him. But this Knox person sounds like a semi-big threat... hmmm."
"I have something else to tell you, Garroth. And you won't like it a single bit," I bite my lip. I don't want to be the one to tell him this!
"Alright, go ahead." He answers. I pull out the piece of paper.
"Knox is not the one in Zenix's head. It is his apprentice, Evangeline. She is experienced in magicks. The only reason I know this is because of this- I found it on the ground on my last day in God Grave. Knox must have dropped it." I read the note aloud to Garroth:
We sign this and we have agreed to all of these terms. Evangeline must use her magicks to help Knox destroy Zenix. In return, Knox must help Evangeline destroy Garroth Ro'meave. Knox must give Evangeline the knowledge to become a full Shadow Knight. In order for Knox's transformation to be complete, he must kill Lord Floralili. In order for Evangeline's transformation to be complete, she must kill Garroth Ro'meave, for she has no lord that she protects. This contract is officially signed by:Knox and Evangeline
I look at Garroth and wait for a response.
"WHO DROPS THIS STUFF? WHO THE HECK IS EVANGELINE?!?! WHY DOES SHE WANNA KILL ME? WHY ARE PEOPLE MAKING CHILDREN INTO SHADOW KNIGHTS?!"
"Garroth, I understand your worry and your confusion, but we must destroy this 'Evangeline' character before she can complete her full transformation- which would be to kill... you." I stare at my feet awkwardly, "I know Knox is going to come after me. I just need you to keep Zenix in the dark about this and you need to make sure he doesn't come after me if I get kidnapped. Please, Garroth? I know this is a lot to take in."
"Well, I won't tell Zenix or let him do something stupid. But as long as you are with me, I'll let nothing happen to you. This 'Evangeline' sounds young, so she shouldn't be too hard to defeat, but this Knox guy might be a bit of a challenge..."
"I don't know... the girl has magick..."
"Screw magick! I know that is something a stupid twelve-year-old girl would say, but... it's true. Magicks users aren't always hard to defeat. What type of magicks are we talking about, here? Potions?"
"Oh no! She has magicks in her... she somehow can make Zenix think about Knox... I don't really know, but she really wants to destroy you, so just don't worry too much about me."
"Zella, shush. You're sounding just as annoying as Zenix can be. Over my dead body will you get hurt. But, I HAVE NEVER MET AN EVANGELINE IN MY LIFE! What did I do to make her wanna kill ME?"
"Okay, I trust you. But she clearly knows exactly who you are, so this is really confusing me... I don't know... I should just wake Zenix or something..." I say. Who would want to kill someone they don't know?
"Well, I'll think about this and we can discuss this later. Go wake up Zenix, we shall be going to join Azura for statistical training. You want to come?"
"I appreciate the offer, but I want to investigate this note further. There is more writing on the back, but I need to decode it or something. It must be in a different language."
"Okay, just don't go wandering off, I don't want another incident happening again..."
"Don't worry. I will just be here." Garroth climbs down the ladder and I sigh. I walk over to Zenix, who is still mumbling. I brush his bangs off his face, but he grabs my hand and holds it hard. I almost scream.
"LET GO OF ME, YOU MONSTER! YOU ARE MORE OF A MONSTER THAN I AM! WHY DO YOU DO THESE THING TO ME?!" he jerks my hand away and I stare at him in surprise. I know he wasn't talking to me, but still, something really isn't right. I need to wake him up. "FINE! I WILL SACRIFICE MYSELF! JUST LET THEM LIVE!" Zenix screeches. I shake him and he wakes up, his eyes wide open. He is staring at me in fear. "Your... your... not... dead..." he murmurs. I don't think he wanted me to hear that, so I pretend I heard nothing. Did I die in his nightmare?! Zenix straightens and gets up quickly. "I need to get ready..." he growls and he storms off, without telling me anything. I guess we do hide things from each other...
