This world feels strange. Like I don't belong in it. I want to belong, but I don't. Only one person thinks I belong. Not my dad, not my... nevermind. Only one friend believes I can. They should be coming soon. Oh wait! Here they come! The knock on the door is soft. Smart. My dad will hear nothing! I open the door softly.
"Well hello, Zenix!" she says, smiling.
"Hi, Zella! You are just in time! Come on, let's go out of here." I reply. But instead, we stare at each other for a quick moment. I see her long brown hair and her shining brown eyes with her rosy red cheeks. Zella loses my gaze.
"Yeah, let's go," she says awkwardly. She leads me out the door and I close it softly.
We run around the village a few times before we have to hide ourselves in a pile of trash in a dark alley. "Fun" is not a word you use here. We live in a small dreary village called God Grave. The lord here has threatened to blow this place up tons of times and any light found here is crushed by the guards. But Zella and I get away with a lot of things.
"What do you want to do when you grow up, Zenix?" Zella asks as we sit in a dark alley. I laugh.
"Umm, run away from this wretched place of course!" I laugh. Zella giggles.
"I mean occupation wise," Zella explains. I need no time to think about that question.
"I want to be the best guard that this world has ever seen!" I announce loudly, "What about you?"
"I want to be a healer," Zella says quietly. She sighs and I bring her close to me.
"I know these dreams will always be dreams," I comfort, "but maybe someday, we will get out of here." Zella stares into my eyes.
"You really think so?" she asks. I see tears start to form in her eyes.
"Of course! I promise Zella, one day we'll escape together and find a new village that has good food, good homes good everything! And we will live in one of those houses... together, As our dreams come true!" I smile and hug her. Then I take her hand, and I walk her home.
When I get home, my dad is already waiting for me. I have never been caught outside the house before.
"Zenix," my father scowles.
"Hi Father," I respond duly. He punches my shoulder really hard.
"Dinner is ready. Now come! You aren't allowed outside at this time!" Father takes me into the kitchen and forces me into my chair. I look next to me at the empty chair where... nevermind. Father puts a plate of cooked rotten flesh in front of me and I sigh at it. I would die for a baked potato.
"We all would," Father grunts. I realize I said that outloud. He is ripping the flesh and stuffing it in his oversized mouth. This is about time. I get up from my seat and walk toward my room.
"Hey! Sit back down, boy!" He yells. I freeze. Uh-oh.
"But Father," I say innocently, "I have to use the bathroom!" Father gives me a hard stare, then points at my seat. I sigh and sit back down. No escape tonight.
"Eat your food and tell me what you were doing outside today! Now!" he shouts. I shuffle my feet on the floor.
"Well, I was with my friend named Zella, and..." I begin.
"Is it just Zella, or is it like Isazella or Gabrizella, or something?" Father interrupts.
"No it is just Zella," I answer. Father grunts. "We were just... doing stuff," I finish. Father's eye start to twitch.
"That is all?! You were just, doing stuff?! I am so ashamed of you, boy! You could have been monster hunting or doing something useful!" Father yells at me, "Eat your food, now! Before I make you." I take a bite of the rotten flesh and cringe. I always get poisoned from this...Hey guys! I know this story has a slow start, but it gets WAY better! Thanks for reading!
