I sit on my bed, looking at my room. It is so drab, so closed in. My thoughts change to Zenix and last night. Seeing him, helping him, I... I wish...
I am startled with a bang on my wall. I fall to the floor. I open my back door to see what it was. Zenix. He is smiling, and I smile back. He comes in.
"Sorry about that," he apologizes softly, "And thank you for helping me last night. I never said thank you at the time." I giggle.
"You were out like a light!" I laugh, "Are you feeling better?"
"Pretty much. Just a few cramps now and then."
"Great! I'm glad it worked!" We stare at each other in silence for a while. I notice little sparkling in his eyes, but I shake it away. It is not real. It is just wishful thinking, I think to myself. But I can't stop staring. Maybe they are sparkling...
Zenix grabs my hand and takes me out onto my roof. I realize that it is raining. He takes me down and we chase each other around for a bit. We start to splash each other and I whip my hair at him. Suddenly, I feel cold... and dirty. Zenix had dumped mud on me and I look at my messy clothes and hair. I laugh and dump a ton of mud on his wet hair. We find a place with no guards and stand close to each other. I blush, and his face is flushed.
"You know... I feel like this city is a dark scary cave... and you..." I stutter. Zenix puts his hand on my shoulder. "You are like the one torch of light that I have," I finish. Zenix smiles and his face is glowing. Or maybe that is just me.
"I feel the same way," he replies softly. Then he shutters. I try to meet his gaze, but I can't. "There... is something... I want to tell you..." Zenix stutters. I am getting nervous. Zenix only ever stutters when something is making him fearful.
"Zenix," I say, "you can tell me anything." I finally meet his gaze and he looks scared, yet happy somehow.
"It is not a... secret, exactly," he murmurs. I feel my eyes get wide.
"How do I not know this already?! What... I don't understand," I am freaking out. Zenix never keeps things from me!
"It is not anything like that!" he assures, "I have just..." he sighs, "always wanted to tell you this, but I don't know how to put it into words."
"Well, don't stress over it," I say. Zenix looks into my eyes, his pupils wide.
"Have you... ever felt like whenever... umm... you see someone or something... you feel like... it is sparkling?" Zenix asks nervously. I smile, and look closer into his sparkling brown eyes.
"Actually, I have," I answer. Zenix seems to be glowing brighter.
"Well, I always... feel that way when I am... umm... around you..." he confesses. "And we are really close friends, so I didn't know if... well... you wanted to be closer?" I gasp and cover my mouth in shock.
"Zenix, I..." I stutter with surprise. He takes both of my hands and stares deeper into my eyes.
"I know this isn't the best place to tell you this. You know, in the freezing rain in a dark alley," Zenix mentions, "but I just wanted to tell you the truth." I look at our hands together. They seem to fit... perfectly together.
"Zenix," I begin, "remember when I said that we are in a dark cave and that you are my only light?" Zenix nods. "Well, unless your fire burns out, I will always stand by you." I lean closer until our lips touch and I feel a sudden connection of joy and hope.
