Chapter 43 ~ Heathens

I sat next to Lucy, with Mira behind me, and Natsu behind Lucy. We honestly were just singing and doing random stuff, playing games until the sun started to set. 

"Hey Lu-chan?" I asked. She turned to face me.

"Yeah, what's up?"

"Well, shouldn't we switch drivers?"

"Nah, I think I'm good, you can sleep if you'd like." I glanced at her and shook my head. 

"I'm good, but I think Gajeel and Natsu probably won't wake up," I pointed out, looking at them over my shoulder. Laxus was on his phone and Mira was giggling.

"True, true!" She hummed. Lucy pulled over for gas and got out and walked into the little shop. I stretched in my seat and got out to stretch my legs. 

After a while, Lucy didn't come out. I started to get a bit worried. "Natsu," I called, shaking him a bit. He groaned in response.

"What?" He asked groggily.

"It's Lu-chan, I think she's missing." By now, Natsu was up -- and highly alert. I told him to calm down and I would check inside. He nodded and I walked away anxiously. I couldn't breathe, my heart was racing. "God, you better be okay," I hissed.

I walked into the shop and looked at the guy behind the counter. "Hello, sir?" I asked. "Did you see a girl, a bit taller than me, brown eyes, blonde hair," I stopped for a moment and he nodded. "Where did she go?"

I followed where he pointed. Out back? Why would she go out the back door. I heard a spine chilling shriek and Natsu's head bolted up and he ran around the side of the building. I quickly ran out the door and stopped dead, staring ahead of me. Two men, much bigger than me held Lucy, one of the men held a knife to her throat. I gasped and looked at Natsu.

"You come any closer, she dies!" The larger one of the men shouted. Lucy was sobbing and he guy kicked her viciously and her sobs died into a slow whimper.

"What do you want with her?" Natsu shouted back, his face heating up.... He clenched his fists, he and I both knew how easy it would be to save her using magic, not to mention the other two men, how slow they would be to catch us. But, of course, we didn't know if they were magic wielders  themselves. 

I got into a quick fighting stance and stayed back, secretly texting Gajeel and Loke for help. Gajeel texted back, saying he'll be there. 

Five minutes later, I spotted Gajeel's glowing red eyes from the dark shadows, and Loke right behind one of the men. A small smirk played on my face and I dashed away to distract them. The guy - dumb enough as it is -  let her go. Natsu ran forward and scooped her up and ran to the car. We all quickly scrambled away after Gajeel took the three guys out. We loaded up the cars, and started our journey again. Lucy was knocked unconscious once she hit the ground. Natsu wrapped his arm around her and held her close in the middle seats of the Jeep. I sighed and shoved the key in the ignition and started to pull out of the gas station. "God dammit. That scared the shit out of me," I mumbled.

"This is problematic..." Ezra whispered, her head balanced on Jellal's legs in the back seat. 

Natsu didn't say anything, just stroked Lucy's hair gently as she slept against him. I looked in the mirror and sighed, looking at all my friends. Gavel quietly placed his hand on my knee and sighed. 

"We're going to be okay," he said quietly. 

"I sure hope so," I sighed, staring at the road. I played M83 quietly and kept driving. "We'll be there tomorrow afternoon." I whispered, looking at Gajeel. "We have to start our lives over."
