As I left the house, I made sure to take in everything I could. I knew my way to the Leaky Cauldron, so I continued walking. Everything I saw from the muggle world seemed so fascinating. The streets were lined with shops, and I spotted things I had read about in my books, an electronics store, many supermarkets,a car dealership, and a few other things I didn't recognize.
Then as I was walking, I felt something pulling at my shirt. I looked down and saw a little girl, wearing a pink frilly dress. She had blonde hair and her big blue eyes started up at me with interest. With a start, I realized that this was the first muggle I had ever interacted with. She started to speak and said in a high pitched voice," Hello! Your shirt is pretty! Wanna lolli?" She stared up at me, making direct eye contact. I realized I was meant to answer.
" T-thank you. And...no thank you... a-about the lollipop I mean. " Okay! Goodbye!" she said enthusiastically. She turned around and I looked up. Who I assumed was her mother was heading towards us. She picked up the little girl, and smiled at me. " Sorry" she said apologetically. "She's very social. The girl giggled and they began walking away.
I smiled and continued walking. Eventually, I reached the Leaky Cauldron, and entered. Mother had told me to ask for directions to Diagon Alley from here. I wondered why she didn't just give me directions. I shrugged it off, and made my way inside, trying to take in everything I saw. Many witches and wizards milled around, ordering food, and chatting.I walked up to someone who looked as though they worked there. " Hello" I said politely, " Do you have directions to Diagon Alley?"
He turned around, staring at me like I was insane. " Ya don't know ow' to get ta Diagon Alley? Aren't you one a us Missy? I thought, at least, if ya knew ow' ta get ere, you'd know ow' ta get to Diagon Alley." He had a thick Scottish accent and also a strange way of talking, and I almost couldn't understand a word he said, but I managed to decipher. " Y-yes... I don't know where it is sorry, and I need to get there to get school supplies."
" Wait wait wait. Aren't you the LeClair kid? I eard one a dem was pose' ta come ere' today."
" Yes, I am sir. "
"I eard that ya only get the exact amount ta get only things on dat list der'" he said gesturing to the paper I was holding in my hand.
"Yes sir that's correct. Now can you please tell me how to get to Diagon Alley?"
" Aye Barns! Barns get oer' ere' and get this young lady some galleons! Now Barns!" he yelled across the room to an old man. The man stood up and walked towards us. His face was wrinkled and he had a large bag. He reached us and looked at me.
" Hello miss..."
"Sage"
"Hello Miss Sage. I have been told that you are in need of some gal-... wait.. Sage LeClair?"
Why does everyone know who I am? Weird??
"Yes sir, and I really don't nee-"
He had grabbed my arm and simply nodded and said, "LeClair" He pulled down his bag, and looked through it until he pulled out a smaller bag. It was jingling loudly. He handed it to me.
" I..I really can't take this Mr. Barns. I don't need it I swear. I re-"
He looked at me pleadingly and said. " Just.. take it. Iv'e got to much money on my hands. Iv'e just won the what muggles call the " lottery". I exchanged my muggle money for galleons, and it was a colossal amount. I have no idea what to do with it all. And I over heard your conversation. Go out back, and from the trash cans three up and two across. I wish you well. Now then, Larry, how about a drink?" he finished, turning to the man who I had talked to me first.
" Ah yes please. Thank ya Barns!" He said and then they both patted me on the back and said, "Good luck".
I turned around and walked out of the pub. I was so startled, I realized that I had just taken a large amount of money from a man I didn't even know. I whipped back around and reentered the pub, but the two had disappeared. I walked back out again and did as Barns had told me. I counted up from the trash cans. Three up and two across. I tapped the brick, and watched as the wall began to come apart. I stumbled back in awe as I watched the wall make a large archway.
I realized that I had forgotten to breath and let out a sigh. I walked forwards, and entered a world I had never seen or experienced before.
Funnily enough, this was the second time today that this feeling had happened.
