What you want in a mentor is someone who truly cares for you and who will look after your interests and not just their own. When you do come across the right person to mentor you, start by showing them that the time they spend with you is worthwhile. - Vivek Wadhwa

I jog down the steps, making my way to the kitchen. My mom is cooking a big breakfast like she does every morning before going into work. I guess she doesn't have to today though.
"Morning mama." I greet, kissing her temple. She smiles, putting the eggs she just finished cooking in a bowl.
"Morning baby. How was the club last night?" She questions, passing me a glass of orange juice and an Advil. I thank her, taking both.
"It was cool. Until niggas wanted to started mess. Ramel and I called an Uber and bounced. You know how we get when we get a liquor in us." My mom nods with raised brows, mixing the pancake batter to make the muffins.
"Yes. You and Ramel are y'all father's children. Even though I don't think Connor got into many fights like Jefe did." She says.
"Yea, Uncle Connor is pretty calm out of Pop and Cornelius. Where is Pop anyway?" I question.
"Upstairs getting ready for work. You want the bowl?" She questions. I shake my head no, putting it in the sink. I wash it out for her, since she's busy cooking.
"When do your classes start back up?" I put the bowl in the dish rack to drain.
"In two months. I can't wait cuz you know football season starts back up." I smile. I go to UCLA, majoring in engineering. Since I was a kid, I always loved building things with anything I can find, but as my career I want to be a professional NFL player. Engineering is something to fall back on, just incase things backfire. Two things that I love you can't beat that.
"Oh ok, have you talked to Giana since break began or..." I sigh.
"Nah. She's out in Barbados with her family." Giana is this female I use to talk too for a while, but don't any more. Just like Imani I'm hard driven and love isn't really on my mind. I use to chase Giana, like my pop did with my mom but that ain't for me. When Giana told me she wasn't looking for a relationship I just said cool, and left it at that. Now that I'm not chasing her, she be blowing up my phone and shit. And I ignore every text and call, especially the late night text.
I understand why my Pop chased after my mother. She went through a lot and was scared to love him because of her parents threatening her and shit. As she got older, she was traumatized and was thinking they might try to hurt my father like they said they would years ago. He knew in his heart she loved him too. He just had to make her see it. So no, he wasn't desperate like people thought he was. He just knew who he wanted and that was my mother. I don't know why people can't see that.
