Chad heard Alyssa's screams, day and night.  He desperately wanted to stop them.  Desperately wanted to help.  He began to call her name.

"Alyssa!  Alyssa!  Can you hear me?"  But every time, there was no response.  That didn't mean he gave up hope.  He began to pace, thinking.

He obviously couldn't go throw the wall of ice.  He had nothing to get at it with, and he wasn't even sure Ryan, the stronger of the two, could do it.  But what about the other part of the barrier?

In all his pacing, he had come to find that he was somehow trapped in by wall of ice AND a wall of fire.  How that worked exactly, he wasn't sure.  But he knew it wasn't hot enough to melt the ice, which probably meant it wasn't hot enough to melt human flesh.  Keyword being probably.

He walked over to the wall of flames.  He examined it, looking for any weak spots.  Seeing a semi-smaller part, he backed up, gathering his courage.  He ran towards it, and jumped.

He leaped through the wall of flame.  He felt a slight prickle, but no serious burning.  He was still alive, and his flesh was not charred.  He rolled to his feet and stood.  He looked around.  There she was, curled on the floor.

He wanted to run to her, to enfold her in his arms and apologize and kiss her and never let go, but judging from the screams from earlier, that might not be the best course of action at the moment.  So he walked to her slowly.
