Chicago was sweltering in the July sun. A swift look across the lengthy streets showed waves of heat shimmering and rising into the air. Isabel sat at her desk peering out of her two bedroom apartment window and wished her air-condition had a higher setting.
"Why are you working on your day off?" asked a voice just beyond her bedroom door. It was Reagan, her roommate and co-worker.
"This article wont finish itself Rea. Plus Amanda is expecting it in two days." replied Isabel.
Her mind wandered to when Amanda, her editor in chief had begged and pleaded with Isabel to have the article done in 3 days instead of 5. Isabel had agreed begrudgingly, not finding the Burberry Spring/Summer collection of interest at all. But as she concluded her final paragraph with a quick nod to beige colours and tartan patterns, her article was complete, and Isabel would be free for the next couple of days.
"Alright well once you're done we're heading out for drinks. It's almost 5pm and it's still boiling outside. I need a refresher!" Exclaimed Reagan, flinging her golden curls over her shoulders and walking off with purpose.
Isabel sighed with a laugh tickling her lips. Reagan always knew how to get Isabel up and about.
Once happy with her article, Isabel changed out of her baggy sweat pants and loose t-shirt into something more drinks appropriate. A hip hugging mini skirt and loose white shirt that she tucked in along with burgundy flat shoes. Reagan was already at the door clad in a blue skater dress and white sandals.
After almost being shoved out of the door, Isabel and Reagan caught a taxi on their apartment corner and headed to The Phoenix.
The girls sat at the bar sipping their cocktails.
"So tell me about Nicholas." Isabel started. She watched as Reagan's eyes grew wide and she spluttered on her drink.
"Huh?!" she wondered. Looking at Isabel with mock confusion.
"C'mon Rea you've been calling him non stop. Not that I can blame you the guy is seriously attractive."
Isabel remembered when Nicholas had walked into the building for TwoKeys magazine and had asked for Reagan specifically. Reagan was a photographer for the magazine, so models asking for her location was nothing different. Isabel remembered Nick clearly, his dark brown hair flipped to one side, his deep set eyes scanning the office nervously (it was one of his first jobs) and his thick set frame making all the women in the office reconsider their life choices. Now two months later, Reagan and Nick had been talking every so often. But only recently had the relationship gone from "every so often" to "every day."
Reagan smiled down at her drink and looked up with clouds in her eyes.
"He's great Isabel. really honestly great." And Isabel knew that Reagan was deep in it with Nick. Luckily for Reagan, Isabel's phone began to buzz and chime at that moment meaning she no longer had to explain her situation with Nick.
Isabel looked down at the device in her hand and saw Amanda's name flash up. Isabel furrowed her brow and she wondered what Amanda could possibly want at this time. The office was closed and she had already submitted the Burberry article before leaving the apartment. Deciding that it must be something of great importance, Isa swiped to answer.
"Hey Amanda."
"Isabel! Thank heavens you answered!"
"Yeah I almost didn't...what's going on? Everything okay?"
"Yes yes everything is great!"
Isa thought that Amanda sounded excited. Nervously excited and she was talking faster than normal.
"Amanda seriously what's up?"
"Alright alright. I didn't want to say anything to anyone until it was official. But I thought I'd try my luck considering the magazine is doing so well."
Isa sat still, waiting for the news to finally leave her mouth.
"I submitted a request to Marvel Studios in Burbank California to see if they would let us interview a few cast members from the new Captain America film..."
Amanda was now on loud speaker so that Reagan could hear as well. The two girls leaned in a little closer to the phone and neither one breathed as they waited for Amanda to continue.
"And they said yes!"
Isa and Rea looked at each other wide eyed. Reagan's mouth hung open and Isabel had forgotten how to breathe.
"Amanda are you sure...they didn't just say they'd think about it?" Isabel asked with caution. Refusing to think too much.
"yes yes I am definitely sure! I got an offical letter of response today from the PR department saying that we have the all clear!"
Reagan clapped her hands to her mouth and Isabel steadied herself on the bar stool with her free hand, suddenly regretting her second cocktail.
"Amanda what does this mean? Why're you telling me?"
"Because Isa...and I assume Rea is there with you too?"
"Hi Amanda." Rea said sheepishly.
"I want you two to head over to the TwoKeys office in New York and help Richard with the interview. I need my best photographer and writer on this."
Reagan let out a small squeak of excitement while Isabel gasped with happiness.
"So wait...Richard is the editor in chief for the new york office right? He's going to run the interview and you want Rea and I to help out?"
Isabel's mind was running away with her. She would be in New York. Writing. Meeting cast members of one of the biggest films of the year. With her best friend.
"That's it my love!" Amanda squealed. "Now I best be off otherwise that husband of mine at home will think I've run away with Chris Evans ha! Oh let's not joke about that it's too sad. I'll give you both better details tomorrow at the office."
Both Reagan and Isabel giggled and bid Amanda a goodnight. They sat in silence for a few seconds not knowing what to do. Then after much pondering, Reagan threw her arms in the air and yelled,
"Fuck yeah New York!"
