The excruciating pain in her left knee caused Dawn to pull right out of her slumber. God! No matter how many Motrin she took this pain was just not going away. For the past two months she had not missed any of her daily doses of folic acid and her pain killers always helped in subsiding the pain. But just not today. Since morning, she has been experiencing succession of pains. She was even unable to join Kyungsoo.
The pair had become closer since they both found the fabric room. They had decided to spend their spare time making babies and children clothing and other crocheted and knitted stuff since tons of wools were also available. After they left the house, they would take it to an orphanage or donate it to some organization.
At first it was her ankles and now it seems the pain was moving up. Could it be that that time of the month was close? No she was expecting it a day after her bday, she vividly recalled.
Great, she would most definitely be in so much pain on her bday. Sure, her condition was getting very worse, her period was far away but here she was experiencing so much pain.
As a sickle cell patient, having her period has always been a disaster. Such patients are naturally anaemic. This means, that they already have a low blood count, less oxygen carrying ability to their cells and are at risk for fatigue, exhaustion and tiredness. Now, when you throw in a period, sickle cell patients are losing blood on top of their low hemoglobin count.
Some patients have pain in their lower back, or other joints before, during or after their period. Remember that during your period, there are a lot of hormones floating around doing Mother Nature's bidding: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), Estrogen, Progesterone and of course, Testosterone.
Those were their family doctor's words when she was in so much pain during her very first period of her life. She was only fourteen back then. Her mom and her sister, who also suffered from the same disease had been there to comfort her.
Sadly, they weren't available when she got the worst news of her life; it was only her. The way her life has been for so many years now-the independent Dawn, taking care of and looking after herself.
Doctor Mo Bei's voice still ringing clearly in her mind:
Your results are very bad. The oxygen flow to your blood seems to be decreasing and your blood count keeps going lower. Dawn, at such rate, you will have roughly a few months to live. I suggest you live your life to the fullest.
Unshed tears stung her eyes as she pulled herself out of bed, luckily Kitty was fast asleep. She needed comfort food, and the chocolate cake eomma had baked for her earlier wasn't going to waste.
Crying never helps, she motivated herself as she made her way into the kitchen.
Thankfully, the ever sweet Choco had understood and exempted her from all strenuous activities when she told her she couldn't continue with such exercises without telling her the exact reason.
She took out the cake, cut a small piece, placed the larger portion on a plate then put the smaller piece back in the fridge.
