"Dad?" I ask, watching the door close behind him, reminded how I will never forget how what will happen tonight will affect him and turn him into something he's not. Maybe it's best to tell him I'm going to say no? But- that wouldnt make sense. How am I suppost to know about my engagement if I hadn't been asked about it yet?
"Dad." I scream, hoping he'd hear it through the door, thinking about how tonight could have been the best night of my life, or the worst. that voice tells me.
"Daddy!" I yell opening the door. He stares at me with big eyes, looking away after our eyes meet. Guilt comes rushing from my thoughts. He stands near the door, beside a table with tools spread out on it. There is a old car in the middle of the garage.
"Hi." He says, turning around.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"Nothing. I have to finish my work." He doesn't look back at me.
"What are you working on?" I ask, walking towards the car.
"I think it would be best if you left me to work, I'm on a deadline." Now I remember. He promised our neighbour, Jame's he'd fix up his old car.
"Are you fixing Jame's car?" I ask, touching the read paint on the hood. I see my distorted reflection in the bumper.
"Yea." He respond's with no emotion.
"You know you can tell me what's bothering you right?" I stare at him, crossing my arms in disappointment that hehadn't already.
"No I can't." He sits down on a chair that we used to keep in the garage.
"Why not?" I stand infront of him.
"It wouldn't be fair for you." He looks at his watch.
"You know its 1:30 right?" He asks.
"Yea obviously." I respond sarcastically.
"Well then I would hurry over to the neighbours." He ponders.
"What? Why?" I respond, worried I'm forgetting something.
"You told me yesterday that you were going to walk Lucky?" He asks, waiting for an response. I don't respond, I just stand there, trying to make sense of what he's saying.
"You know?" I don't. He laughs at me.
"Jesus I mean the neighbours dog, Lucky." He smiles, and I feel some of the guilt lift off my shoulder. Then I remember promising Erika, Jame's daughter that I'd go walk the dog with her.
"Oh! I must have forgot about that." I say, turning around.
"Yeah you did." He turns around, starting up a tool I'm not familiar with. It makes a loud noise. I smile, not turning back. I open the door and walk back into the foyer, grabbing a hair tie off the table in the hallway. It takes me two minutes to put my hair in a bun, Just like i used to. I grab a jacket from the closet beside the door at the bottom of the stairs, it's cold at the end of November.
I open the door, remembering all the times I used to play with Erika on my driveway ad on the street. We used to play basketball almost every other night before it got to cold for us.
I walk outside, and onto the driveway. I look closely at some of the tree's on my property, I find a small orange tree I remember planting with my mom when we first moved here. The thought of this memory forces a smile to my lips. I snap back into consciousness and look at my watch, 1:38, I'm late!
I hurry across the driveway and make a sharp corner to my left, onto Erika's driveway. I hurry up onto the porch. I let out a small scream when the door opens and Erika walks out with Lucky, her golden retriever.
