Four days…The words echoed in my head. Four days until the best birthday ever. After I finished eating, I practically ran up to my room and plopped down onto my bed. Four days until I see Slipknot live…Corey Taylor….I thought giddily, turning on my ipod on its dock and putting on Slipknot. I went to my desk, grabbed a charcoal pencil, opened up my sketchbook, and began to draw.

I thought about the oak tree in the backyard. I started to draw the trunk, thick and round. I closed my eyes, letting my heart take control. I felt my hand swoop and scratch. After about fifteen minutes, I opened my eyes and looked at the picture. I gasped as I saw a chain hanging from a crow’s beak while it was on a branch. I stared at it, feeling confused.

Caw-caw! Caw-caw! I jumped and squealed as a crow perched on my window sill. I went to my window and opened it, getting a closer look. My eyes widened as I saw a chain from its beak. I reached for it when the crow pecked my hand.

“OUCH! Oh you little bastard!” I yelled, snatching the chain from the crow before it could react. It squawked and flew off.

I looked at the chain, seeing little diamonds intertwined in the chain. I sat on my bed, still looking at the chain. Weird… I thought. The crow came back and dropped something in my lap. I looked in my lap and saw a violet flower shaped necklace piece. I picked it up and dangled it in front of me. I flipped it over and saw words written in some foreign language.

Dont vultus in tenebris. Trust lux semper” I flipped the pendant back over, wondering what to do. Might as well go downstairs and use the computer. Ugh…technology. I slid off my bed and peeked out my door. Parents are still downstairs in the kitchen…It sounded like they were arguing about something.

“…I don’t care if she is almost 18, we cannot tell her!” My dad, Jeremy, shouted.

“We should!” My mom yelled back.

Tell me what? I went to the middle step of the stairs, thankful they didn’t creak.

“We must tell her before she finds out next week. If we tell her now she’ll be less confused. And less mad.” Mom explained.

Dad sighed a breath of defeat. “Fine, Fine.”

“Sasha! Can you come down here?”

I sighed, going down the rest of the stairs and into the kitchen.

“Yes, mom?” I said, confusion crossing my voice.

“We…have some news.” Dad chimed in.

I looked at mom and dad strangely.

“You’re adopted..and you're not exactly human…”
