“What do you mean, ‘not exactly human’?” I stared at my parents, not caring that my voice went shrill.
“Well, um…” My mom started, but trailed off, looking at my father for help. He sighed deeply, looking defeated.
“Exactly what we just said. You aren’t human,” He just left it at that, shrugging as if it didn’t matter. My mother shot him an exasperated look. “You are so not fucking helpful.” She looked at me and said,
“We- well, I- thought we should’ve told you earlier in life, but your father was being an ass and disagreed,” Another dirty look.
“So, wait. If I’m not human, what am I?” I asked, trying to keep voice neutral.
Mom bit her lip then said, “A witch. Not the ones in Harry Potter, but half-vampire and half-pixie. You have the flight and cunningness of a pixie while the speed, strength and blood thirst of a vampire. Your vampire side will basically keep you alive in small emergencies. But your body is deathly allergic to gold. Pure gold,” And with that, she went upstairs to her room, leaving me alone with my dad.
“Um, how did she know all that?” I asked Dad. He just shrugged and went upstairs to his room with Mom. “Good night to you too, ass” I muttered under my breath. I went back upstairs to my room and plopped down on the bed. Then I remember the amulet.
“Fuck,” I sighed and grabbed the chain, with the amulet on it, and exited my room. Then I heard my parents argue from their room and I went to up to the wall next to them, listening carefully.
“I can’t believe you told her! I was perfectly fine with her not knowing!” Dad bellowed, causing me to flinch a bit.
“I don’t fucking care! She needed to be told or else she wouldn’t know!” Mom shrieked.
“Now she probably wants to know who her real parents are! Or where they are! I don’t care if she is almost eighteen. She didn’t need to know!” I heard a loud crash and gasped a bit.
“Yes, she did, Jeremy! She had every right to know! And as her adoptive parents, it was our right to tell her about her own parentage! Just because you are the man doesn’t mean you make all the fucking decisions!” Another loud crash. I flinched and fled down the stairs to the family room. Should I do this? I thought, suddenly feeling hesitant about the whole thing.
Why am I hesitant about this? It’s not like I’m uncovering a huge secret. I went to the computer and booted it up. I sighed, still hearing yelling and crashes from Mom and Dad’s room. I took a deep breath, stood up and went back upstairs. As I went up, I smelt something, but couldn’t figure out what it was. It was metallic, almost coppery. Whatever it was, it smelt wonderful.
I shook my head, clearing my thoughts and stood outside my parents’ room. I knocked hard, flinching as it echoed throughout the hallway. No answer. Knocked again and still no answer. I sighed and turned the doorknob, cursing silently because it was locked. Fuck! I kept banging on the door, each bang harder than the last. Finally, I cracked. I banged on the door as hard as I can, surprised that I actually bent the hinges and warped the hell out of the door. I tilted my head, remembering I had the strength of a vampire and I simply pushed the door, using all my strength. The door came off the hinges and fell back with a loud thud!
I entered the room cautiously, seeing all the broken glass of their vases all over the floor. Then I smelt it again. That wonderful metallic scent from the hallway, but the smell was even stronger in the room. The world went blurry for a moment and my thoughts became jumbled. That was all gone when I saw Mom. I stared in horror at her, lying down on the bed, her face so pale. I took a step toward her and uttered only one word.
“Mom?”
